In and effort to make the main site better I've wanted to expand the info/tips page for a long time. <url url="[Permission to view this media is denied]
">[Permission to view this media is denied]

This will include some semi-pro video(s) that will be shot next spring showing how to net, unhook, photo, hold and release muskies. Probably also a video talking about nets, tools and how they are used.

What else do we need on that page? If someone is new to muskie fishing or has caught one by mistake and now has the muskie bug, what do they need to know?

Tips on lures, tackle, lakes that contain muskies, etc??

Please help me make a list of topics that need to be covered.

There are no wrong answers or ideas!!!

I think a page similar to one in a thread on the MInc forum with pics of best/most common release tools, descriptions of techniques, etc. would be extremely worthwhile. That page is great, but it's hard to find. We can make our own…

I'm not sure I would include the lakes. We don't want to put too much on the site. Enough to plant the seed, but remember, we want to try to reel some new people in to become members. If we put too much on there, some people might not join.

Wouldn't it be to our benefit to show people that there are ONLY 95 managed muskie waters out of more than 11,000 lakes? I'm thinking something like the map that was built by Duke for Fish Fest.

This stuff should be in a "Members Only" part of the site, IMO… Otherwise, like Jim said, others will mine it for info without joining, and our site's bandwidth might be clogged by non-member traffic.

Hi Will,

I am a relative newcomer to the muskie world. I have thought of myself as a profcient educated fisherman.

Here are things I like to read about in regards to muskie fishing.
Seasonal movements
Daily migrational routes
Extremely interested in the forces of nature and how it relates to fish activity. How to put these factors together to help determine a good time to fish compared to others.
I like the scientific, data driven-information.
Want to gather information to better understand muskie behavior. It seems much different than other fish i.e northerns and walleye

Things I am not interested in…Lures and tackle.

Hope this helps

Seriously?

So you're saying that instead of educating people we should hide the info in a members area where Joe public can't be educated?

I have no problem hiding fishing reports but if we can stop someone from:
– using their bass tackle
– not using a leader leader
– not using their walleye net
– netting the fish and putting it on the bottom of the boat (and standing on it while unhooking)
– not carrying the proper hook out tools
– keeping the first 42"er they catch for the wall

I was talking about the lake info, etc.; yes, the CPR info I first talked about is best in the open…

Ok… maybe I need to start over with this.

If you knew nothing about muskie fishing what would you need to know?

– the right rod (not your walleye spinning rod)
– the right line (though 30# PowerPro sounds strong enough it isn't)
– the right leader (the leaders at WalMart aren't what you want)
– the right net (that net that looks big enough at WalMart isn't)
– tools to release
– some lures aren't muskie lures
– some "muskie lures" are junk (tips for making the right choices when you start out)

What would you have wished was on our info/tips page when you first started.

As far as lake info, I'm not thinking how, what lure, when and where (not fishing report stuff). Instead just a write up about how many muskie lakes we have in Michigan, their location and if they are stocked or natural.

I'm all for a "beginner's equipment" list, I think that would very much help people who are new and not sure what they need to get. I would like to see a moon phase chart and a way to adjust it depending on what part of the state you live in or if you'll be fishing out of state. A good detailed section for CPR id definitely a good idea. Maybe somewhere on the page about why you don't want to take a legal fish out of the lake even though it is legal.

I can't open that link. Can you screen print it or give a description of where it is located on the M.I. site?

That information is probably best left to the magazines and other internet sites and not the MMA website. Discussions about that stuff on the members forum is great and probably considered a member benefit by many. I personally love talking about that stuff here on the forum but if I'm going to write and article about it in detail… I'm going to make sure I get a check for it.

I really had in mind a tips/info page that would offer the basics for a beginner. Nets that are best, getting the right rods, line and leaders, etc. What I'm thinking is that if someone new walks into Gander, Cabela's and most places they aren't going to find anyone that knows what they are talking about. They will likely walk out with a bunch of stuff and a year later they will wish they never bought half of it.

I'm not sure if you were thinking lures and tackle like a tackle/lure review or along the lines of what I'm thinking which is to suggest appropriate tackle for muskies.

What if you were just starting out but didn't know that you should be using at least 80# braided line on your muskie casting rods? Or that lure you just bought because it was suggested by some kid at Gander was probably a waste of money.

My thought here is that this new improved page would get people started off on the right foot but would also encourage them to come to meetings and join MMA to get the best information possible.

It's quite long for a screen print. Log on to MInc site, go to the forums and navigate to:

All Forums >> [Members Only] >> Bulletin Board

It's called "C&R Hows and whys", and it's on page 5 in the Bulletin Board, about 2/3 of the way down that page. It was written by John Underhill dated 2/26/08.

OK, I didn't know you were talking about the info John put together. I'm thinking something along the lines of that but video. Why force someone to read throug something on the internet when they could watch a video? If we want to keep their attention the education needs to be short and sweet but presented in a way that will keep them interested. A fish in the net when talking about release tools should keep their interest.

And I should've known you know everyone… 🙄

Videos are VERY nice, but if you just want to look up what cutters to buy, or how to hold a fish, or which gloves are best, a static page is best since you don't want to have to search through a video to find one small thing.

I guess what I'm saying is I think it'd be best to have both.

Coming from a new guy to the species:

** 1st** priority I would think would be to safely land a Muskie without hurting oneself followed closely by
**2nd** providing info to increase fish survival, maybe include different climate condition info (hot vs cold weather). how to fight them as not to point of exhaustion, how to net type net etc.

*Proper Fish Handling-thanks guys for the much needed advice- can it be stuck to the top for the new guys to see and easily access? How to unhook in the net in the water-this new to me and when I hear this I want to head to shore and get out and do this standing in knee deep water. How to place the fish in the water after picture time-heavy fish over the side of the boat.

3rd Gear-net, bump board, gloves
4th Knowledgeable fishing partner
5th Picture taking techniques and how to hire someone good looking if you are not.
6th Disease-education
7th Invasive species-how to properly clean bilges trailers etc-lots of grant money out there for some of that stuff.

There is alot of great info on the site pertaining to structure discussions- maybe leave that to ourselves? Leaders-line-reels is a useful information for members and non members. Proper gear might prevent a muskie from eating a double treble and break line only to have her mouth sutured shut with a treble hook.

Will-so my 50# power pro has to go?? dawg.. And my lucky Pike pole? Its for my youngest to cast [smilie=bangtard.gif]

Also since there is such a rivalry between State, Meecheegan, and Ohio State I think the people in the video should be wearing WMU Broncos jackets, hats and shirts.

The info wouldn't be here on the forum it would be on the main site and something like the tips page – <url url="[Permission to view this media is denied]

Depending on what we end up with it would probably be links to pages that have more detailed info plus the video.
