hey jim bass pro has the pete maina reels for 56.00 on clearance
I think they're re-branded Pflueger Trions, so that's a good buy.
Also, I talked to the Okuma guy in Novi, and they have a new round reel line, the Akena, that looks promising. He said they're dropping the Induron line. Around one Benjamin.

That sounds like a great deal. I've heard mixed reviews on the Maina reels. Anyone heard anything about these other ones? They look a LOT like a Calcutta.

Same reel Jim. I don't think they really made and major changes just a facelift to that reel.
You'll get mixed reviews on any reel from $60-400 it doesn't matter. Pflueger builds some good stuff that I've been impressed with from the Gander reels, to the Maina and the Trion.

Did he mention the warranty? The new reels don't have the same warranty. They took away the lifetime warranty that was on the Induron. Smart decision on their part.

From their website:
"Akena reels are backed by a 1-year warranty program"

So you're telling me I can basically get a Calcutta B with a different sticker on it for $100?? 😯

You didn't post a link to a Calcutta you posted a link to the new Maina reel.
As far as durability I think you might be better off with Pflueger vs. the calcutta (I'm basing that on what friends have told me). The TE should be better though because they have a double ARB (anti reverse bearing) that would be tougher to break (I'm sure I could do it though).
That Pete M for $56 is a pretty good steal. They last quite well, and are pretty simple (parts are cheap too) to repair when something does go. Most of my reels now are hybrid Pfleuger, Mainas and old Guide series…all parts are interchangable.
Jim, I'm surprised that you didn't snag one of the reels at the swap in Chicago…over the past 2 years I think our group has come home with like 12 reels, most at half price or less. Highlights have been a brand new Tica Caiman for $60, a used Caiman for $25 and a new Induron for $50. If you ever have trouble bartering just call over the master (Ron B) and it will be yours for less than you can imagine!
I almost got another Calcutta from Thorne. They were going to do a package deal for me for $290 with the Okuma rod out the door. That's not a bad price at all. I didn't see anything at the swap for reels except for the ones that Ron already snagged up. From what I could see, almost all the others were pretty well used.

Anyone have any thoughts on a ABU Big Game HSN?
I had one that I had to get replaced, and the second one isn't much better. Also the bait clicker broke without being used. It's also pretty heavy and the narrower spool makes it feel a little topheavy to me. That being said, it is still my reel of choice for the big blades especially bulging or faster.

I would make a list of what works for you and watch Craigs list and ebay for a while. On Ebay try spelling the reels wrong…I got a Calcutta 401TE for $122 because the guy spelled it wrong.
Now THATS a sweet deal! Took advantage of a similar situation on rain gear this year, I was stoked. A penny saved is another penny you can put towards a new lure
