My 8 year old has no school Wed. and I wanted to take him to a lake with a shot at muskies but a better shot at pike. I am thinking about LSC but with a 8 year old, big lake and colder water I am not sure if that is a safe idea. Anyone know a protected or safer area of LSC with lots of pike (hammerhandles would be OK)
Hudson and Diane are just tough lakes so any ideas within 2 hours of Toledo would be appreciated. What would you throw?
LSC is your not just the closest water but a best bet for fish. (I've never fished it, just my distant opinion.) Weather might bring big waves, though.
From a safety perspective, well, I've always respected 1) wind and 2) lightning. If either are a threat then plan carefully….meaning either 1) don't go out in the first place or 2) be ready to get the hell back to shore as doom looms.
The almost very worst you can do is find yourself and your kid in a spot where rescue types now have to risk their lives to save your butt. I was almost is such a spot 3 times over the years.
Ed,
Gonna be tough to beat launching from Deckers inthe North Channel and running to Grassy. Pike all around that island, and it is protected even in the wind. And, you might catch a 40 pound muskie…
If it is calmer, could also try fairhaven point and marsac. Also consider the sni, which is also protected.
As Ranger said, LSC is prolly your best bet.

I too say head east but I'm thinking a little more south. The lower Detroit River should be great pike fishing and most areas should be super easy to fish in any wind.

What launch would I use? Does anyone have GPS location of the launch or directions where it is?
Thanks

If you go out of elizabeth, fish the bay at the south end of Grosse Isle, near cross dyke, and if you have canadian lisence crystal bay.
Thanks for all the info. guys and I have a Canadian license but since my son is 8 is it safe to assume that he does not need one? If anyone knows please advise and I was going to throw spinnerbaits, J13's, super shad raps and any ideas for other baits for pike would be appreciated.

No he doesn't need a license until he's 16.
W/ these water temps want X-Raps for sure.
