I'm looking to upgrade my current set up and wanted to see what everyone prefers. Looking to get a quality reel at an affordable price $100-$200 and a good casting rod 8'6?8'0?9'0? Any preferred brand names? Preferably in the $100-$150 range.

The Musky Innovations rods are good and aren't a bad price at all. Okuma EVX rods are nice as well and shouldn't be too expensive either. I'd go with at least an 8' and probably an 8'6 as the longer rods makes casting, figure 8'ing, fighting a fish all easier.

You can get a Calcutta 400 B in that price range. Good all around muskie reel. For rods like Jason said the innovation rods are ok. How tall you are and personal preference might dictate rod length. Im 5'10" and like an 8'6" for fishing big plastics and bucktails and an 8' rod for gliders/jerks. If your taller you might find you prefer a 9' rod.

Keep in mind the type of fishing you will be doing to help with rod selection too. WARNING what this means is that you may end up with setups of every possible rod length and action!

The long rods are definitely great for long bomb, open water type casting, way better at 8's, and of course generally excel at fighting and landing big fish. But they suck for pitching into tight spots – like if you are picking apart weed beds or downed wood.

And of course the rod action has to match the weight of the lure you're throwing, mismatches do not fly straight or far!

So general ranges are: for overhead, bomb type casts when accuracy to a specific target is not as important- go with at least 8' rods and match the action to the lure weight. You can almost say the longer the better for this type. For short sidearm or underhand pitches into tight spaces where you have to be accurate- 7'9" at the very most and 7' is not too short.
