This one is dear to my heart. Mat and I just argued about how you could spend a lifetime out there and never catch a fish… Now at least we know there are a few out there…
Haha good luck. I always hear stories of locals seeing them in marinas and this or that. I can't believe that fish was shallow enough to be caught by a bass fisherman. I would think it would over open water chasing perch or whitefish. Obviously he number of accidental catches in the bays of the Great Lakes prove otherwise…
Pretty cool story, happy they let it go, hopefully it lives. Did they get an accurate length/girth measurement at all? Would be interesting to see how it would fit in one of the weight formulas.
My friend worked as a parasail captain for several years on the bays and was on that water literally every day working and fishing. He has seen some huge pike or muskies in there but says they are basically never caught. Mostly in the spring/early summer. Maybe with the huge surge in bass fisherman some more will show up. Surprised no one trolling for trout ever picks one up, they troll lake trout in under 15-50 FOW until like mid june up there. Its actually a pretty cool deal, just like trolling browns with boards but huge numbers of lake trout.

Does anyone know if putting the fish in the live well and transporting it to shore, measuring Ect… Is considering possessing the fish? If so how would that work with the new harvest tag?
Yes, that would be categorized as possession IMO. So, I guess if they would've been caught by a CO with the fish in their livewell on their way back to shore, and they didn't bother to get a muskie tag with their license, it would be considered poaching.
