O.k., got a stereo for the Ranger for my B-Day. I grew up with the belief that the bass from the stereo would be picked up by the fish and scare them off. Since muskies hit baits in the prop wash power trolling I find it hard to believe muskies would care about music being played one way or the other but old wive's tales are hard to shake out of my head. Do you all play music in the boat when casting or trolling or both?
I'm glad to hear you say that Will. I don't put enough fish in the boat to know if it matters one way or the other and the vast majority of the fish I have caught since taking up this brutal sport were with the sonar going. You obviously put lots of fish in the bag and if you don't think having the sonar on puts you at a disadvantage, that's good enough for me for now.
When they're going to eat it doesn't matter. I've caught a bunch of fish with the electric running. Dad stuck a 48" fish one day as we were leaving a spot and I had already started the big motor and had it in gear as he was finishing his retreive. He says "there's one" turns it around in a couple circles and then I hear "got her". She ate on the eight three feet away from a running outboard. No fear. As a matter of fact he's done this a couple times because I also remember a mid-30" fish at Thornapple that ate at the boat with the outboard running.
Now… if I was in a remote area that didn't get a lot of traffic I might consider getting "quiet" if the fish seemed to be put off by the boat.
I was going to say the same thing about remote places where it is dead quiet like the Upper peninsula lakes we fish. I had about 45 inch Musky come up to my trolling motor transducer about 5 years ago up on a remote lake. The fish was clearly interested in the pinging and it even seemed to be mesmerized by it to point of rolling slightly to one side as if being submissive. It was really cool to watch. This fish came from about 20 feet away out of good weed cover and approached my boat very slowly in gin clear water looking directly at my trolling motor powerhead. I had my bow mount transducer strapped to the power head. It was pretty cool. I made the mistake of trying to toss a bait its way and spooked her off. Mike
I have now unlocked the secrets of musky fishing. Rule number 1, muskies love the big engine so ditch the electric troll motor and use the 225 E-Tech. Rule number 2, the ping from the sonar makes muskies submissive (great stroy Mike, I can relate to the submissive thing, my female chocolate lab does it all the time when I scold her for being naughty) and as such they will not eat. I'm golden, 91 fish season here I come. 🙂
