My buddy went to Andy's tackle to get his license and asked for the muskie tag. He was told they didn't have any and he wasn't the only one who asked for it. They told him "Good luck finding one". He left without buying the license and headed to GM. They had no idea what he was talking about. He went ahead and bought the license at GM because he intends on fishing for steelhead tomorrow. But this seems like total nonsense. Something definitely needs to be done on the awareness of these tags…

Don't they print them out of the same machine that prints out all the other licenses?
Yes, it prints out just like another license – using the same machine, same format, and same paper.
I'm a little confused though, if they had no idea what he was talking about why did they tell him "good luck finding one"? Did they think the DNR mailed them a certain amount of tags and they simply had not received them yet? It's not that difficult as it's just another option underneath the fishing licenses. I'll try to take a picture of it on Sunday and post it on here as it's pretty straight forward.

Jason, I wasn't there, I don't know what they thought. Two places couldn't get it right…
I think the confusion Jason, is in the way read the statement…..Andy's told him "good luck finding one", GM told him they had no idea what he was talking about. Different places, different people, same end result. The Tag plan sounds good on paper, but it's real life practicality leaves me feeling kinda blah. They're gonna need to step it way up on info and enforcement if it's gonna have any affect at all, and I just don't believe the overall interest, support, or resources are there for it. Sorry for being a Debbie downer!
This is basically what the screen looks like (see link below). There is no reason they can't figure it out because all they need to do is click to select. If you have a number for that place give them a call and tell a manager or owner about the problem, please. I've run in to issues in the past and had no problem walking behind a counter and "helping" someone get me my correct fishing or hunting license. Even went as far as keying in all of Tylers info one day because the person couldn't figure it out.

I just got off the phone with Andy's. I told the lady who answered the phone about it and she said that everyone who buys a license is offered a tag. I then called my buddy and asked who he had talked to about it and he said "some old guy"…
As far as GM goes, its probably hit or miss depending on the employee working the counter.
This has me thinking that it's just certain individuals ignorance and unfamiliarity with selling licenses.
Maybe instead of all of us going to Gander or Cabelas for our licenses, we could make a point of going to our local bait shops where these issues happen more often. A little reminder, or encouragement can go a long way. Also if we pick up a couple things while in there, we are supporting local business and making them more likely to listen to our encouragement…
I know my local shop refused to ask people if they wanted it, but would print if asked. He thought it was a dumb idea, but after a few conversations he's a little more apt to ask about it and understands the point behind it.
