I know many of you may have these articles but I thought I would pass them along. I watch and read alot of muskie porn throughout the winter months to treat my cabin fever and one of the topics that really gets everyone's blood boiling is muskie spearing. I do think if more people understood that muskies are not killing all of their walleye and really can have a positive impact on the ecosystems where they live, less may end up getting targeted or harvested. I have only been chasing muskies for 4 years, but if you would have asked me 10 years ago to go sit in a darkhouse and spear a muskie, I probably would have said, "let's go, I'll buy the beer." Now, I would have eaten what killed, but I wouldn't have thought much about it because it's legal and the DNR says I can take 1/day so they must be relatively common right? My brother who fishes Loud & Cooke often called me the other day and said he got a few small pike and 2 20-22 inch walleye. I said, just wait until the muskie population gets a foothold and starts to help out the fishery-hopefully you'll start to see better and bigger catches of panfish and walleye and I explained why that may very well happen. I told him to let his buddies know that muskies aren't swimming around eating all the walleye. I'm not naive enough to think that muskies in those lakes won't get wacked, but maybe a few will be released or not speared. Can't hurt right. Anyways, some of the arguments I hear from people who spear are, "muskies hurt the walleye population", and "open water anglers actually kill more muskies due to delayed mortality". I haven't seen any estimates on what open water anglers kill, but I think some evidence is starting to shed some light on the reality that it is less than some think, especially from fisherman who target muskies. Here are some links that may help in educating others on muskies.
