The Michigan DNR, in an attempt to increase fall fingerling production, will be working with the Holland Fish and Game Club to utilize the rearing ponds located on their property. The HFGC will get spring fingerling muskellunge this year if production at Wolf Lake is sufficient. The HFGC will use one of their ponds to rear fatheads to feed the muskellunge in the other rearing ponds.
Kudos to the MI DNR for thinking outside the box to increase MUS production.

woohoo! I love hearing about expanding opportunities. any info on the rearing ponds? what have they been used for in the past? do they need assistance of any kind??? or anything else that might be pertinent?
Sounds like they have the funds and manpower but I've asked that they're made aware that MMA is willing and able to assist. They have a pond they use for youth events and have have used them for walleye rearing from my understanding.
I live about a half a mile from Holland fish and game… I use to fish in the ponds when I was young. I have some concerns about them saying they will use multiple ponds one of which for feeding the muskies and the others for raising muskies..
To start one of the ponds is completely dried up so that's an issue unless they can control how it is filled. They have 2 other ponds I think. One of which is good size the other is smaller I can't remember if it is connected to the bigger one or not.
I have to go by there tomorrow after work so I can take some pictures of the ponds if people want
I can help with any of the stuff if needed down the road
Looks like this will not be happening this year..
I just spoke with a friend who works on the board for the fish and game club here and he said the pond that they planned on putting muskies in won't work out.
Apparently they are having issues with different species of minnows etc getting into the pond through a stream that connects to the pond.
Usually they have it blocked off, but they are still getting through somehow he said.
He also mentioned how the DNR needs 6 to 8 grand to help fund the feeding of the muskies and they don't have the budget for that apparently?
Not sure how much is true from the DNR side of things, but he said they are still raising a bunch of walleye in one of the ponds.
