Interesting post on that forum. It is not uncommon for the area he was fishing to produce 40"+ pike. Since the fish was not landed for positive ID, I wonder if the fish was correctly identified from the distance viewed. However, the potential for migrating muskies from Lake Macatawa and/or Green Bay is real. I have not heard anything more from the DNR about the dna of the muskie caught earlier this year which would give us the best clue where our migrating muskies are coming from. Could there be more stray muskies in Muskegon Lake to be caught? Yes, the potential is there, loaded with food and habitat diversity to welcome any new comers looking for a good home.
There have been occasional Muskies caught in Muskegon lake for years. The lack of good spawning habitat is the reason they have not taken hold and multiplied. There are Muskies in White lake, and Pentwater lake as well. Numbers are very low however and it is mostly bass fishermen who hit the lakes in high numbers that contact them. One got caught by a Salmon fisher last year on a J PLUG Just off the sand docks. If our entire club fished Muskegon Lake for a whole day we might be able to catch one or raise a couple. I had a hold of several big fish in White lake 20 years ago that bit me off that were very big fish. Could have been 20 lb pike I suppose but who knows. Michelle and I while fishing Bluegills have whitnessed a pair of spawning Muskies in a northern drowned river mouth in 2005. The Female was over 45 inches the Male about 36. They were just laying in some nice cabbage side by side on the bottom. Very cool. I hope they made lots of babies. Mike and Michelle
