Guys-
I'm going up to Mullet/Burt lakes this Friday for a week. I've been told these are tough muskie waters to fish but there are some sizable ones located in this area. Any advice on where to start on such a big body of water? I'm familar with these waters and planned on spending time around Pigeon Bay/Indian River but looking for ideas on where to really focus my time. Anyone from this area and fish these waters for muskie? I've got a friend from Georgia coming up with me and would love to get him a muskie since all I hear about is Tuna and offshore fishing. I would appreciate any advice anyone out there can give me. I've got a week to land one! Do any of you know of a muskie guide in this area? Thanks in advance to anyone who responds!!
On Burt, the area in the SE corner between where the Sturgeon River comes in and where the Indian River goes out, plus continuing north past the Indian River outlet, looks to be a natural spot. There is a decent shelf leading to a decent weedline and reasonably deep water close by in that area. The Indian River is a known muskie area seasonally and the walleyes are often suspended out over 35 to 40 feet out in Burt nearby. That said, I have only caught northerns there but it looked to be the best stuff I saw in the lake when I fished it about 10 or 12 years ago.
Scott, I have been fortunate to fish Mullet & the Black River with some other MMA members for the last 3 years. We generally fish Mullet in the spring/early summer near the Pigeon River area and have had decent luck with muskies. Last fall we fished the Black River & boated 2 & lost a larger fish. There is a great new launch in Cheboygan on the river and plenty of great spots to fish, much easier than fishing the lake. We generally fish 2 hard days when we go up and have boater 2 fish each trip. You are obviously dealing with lower density fish, but there is something special about catching a GLS Muskie in it's natural environment regardless of the size. PM me if you would like more info and good luck! By the way, don't wear your "Real Men Don't Spear" t-shirt when you go up or the locals may get a little restless.
Thanks Rob! Yeah I know these spearing guys are everywhere in the area and I'm prepared to catch some heat if they catch my MMA/Muskie's Inc sticker's on the boat. I'll be in a cabin around Topinabee and will make runs up to Cheyboygan River and Indian River. Thanks for the tips and I'll try my hardest to get me a GLS beauty!
