Guys,
When using braided line are you putting mono on first to prevent slipping? I was reading that some guys will do this and wanted to now if it's cruical when fishing for muskie? If so, How do you do it? How much mono and then is it just tied to the braid? Besides using mono is there any other solution that some of you use to correct the "slipping" issue? Thanks!
It's crucial for any type of fishing when using a braid/superline. The superlines don't stretch and hold tight to the spool like mono or flouro. You'll eventually get the line turning on the entire spool.
I have always used mono as backing, on muskie reels, partly to stop any possibility of slipping and also to reduce the amount of braid you need on a reel. I use enough mono backing so that I'm only using 100 yards of braid. I'll use that 1/2 of the braid for one season then reverse it for the following season. Completetly filling a muskie reel with braid is a waste of line. If you are using a low capacity reel (bass reel) then only a few wraps of mono needs to be used or you can use a wrap of electrical tape under the braid which gives the line something to bind with.
I'll be sure to mention this in the next video when talking about proper equipment.
I'm only using muskie reels and so glad I know this now! What's the best knot when tying the mono to the braid? What size mono? I'm currently using 80# Spiderwire Stealth and will go out and make these changes tonight. I just want to do it correctly and have been noticed when I've hooked a couple pike that the line does slip a bit. Thanks and I was honestly unaware of how important this is when landing fish.
I use 15 lb mono usually, mostly because I have a big spool of big game hanging around. The backing doesn't matter much only that it gives a good base. However, line that is too thick will not lay evenly so I wouldn't suggest anything more than 17 lb.
To connect line to backing a uni to uni knot is the best way. It is easy to tie and creates a strong connection. In this case the strength of the connection doesn't really matter because the only time you'll see your backing is when you change line next season.

[quote="Grumman14"]when putting on braided line i just tie it on the spool then take a piece ofduck tape on it. simple and it stops slipping.
Duck tape? 😯 Why would people tape up ducks? Or do you mean Duct Tape as in heating & cooling ducts? 😀 (I'm just messin' with ya!)
