You will all get this in an email soon but just to stress how important this is I want to remind you with this post. Please take the time to write a short email to the Natural Resource Managers
To all MMA members,
The Michigan DNR fisheries division is currently reviewing the proposal MMA presented and coming up with a regulation proposal of their own. This proposal will be reviewed in November by the Natural Resource Managers (NRM’s) and then reviewed in December by the Coolwater Regulation Steering Committee.
I know you are all busy but I’m asking that you please take a few minutes to do a little work on behalf of MMA. MMA members need to persuade the NRM’s that an increase in the minimum size limit to a minimum of 46” and a reduction in the daily possession limit from 1/day to 1 fish per season.
Please write an email to all of the NRM’s and not just the manager in your area (email is easiest for this). All of these managers have stated that they don’t believe we should change from the current 42” minimum size limit. We need to convince them that there is a need to protect and preserve what we have here in Michigan.
There are talking points below that can be included in your email. Please feel free to put them in your own words and include anything else you would like to make your point. I have also included the name and contact information for each Natural Resource Manager.
Thank you in advance for your willingness to support MMA and all muskie anglers in Michigan.
Will Schultz, President
Michigan Muskie Alliance
Talking points for Natural Resource Managers
Factors that need to be addressed with the new Muskellunge Management plan:
– We have a very limited number of Muskellunge waters, less than 1% of Michigan’s waters contain Muskellunge
– 77 have natural reproduction, Only 21 are native waters
– To sustain natural fisheries the management plan recommends that adult Muskellunge are allowed to spawn 4-5 years before they reach the Minimum size limit. With the dramatic size difference between the sexes at maturity, the fishery really needs to be managed to allow females to reach a size that allows them 4-5 years to spawn.
– Average age of maturity is 6-7 years
– Average length of 10 year old female muskellunge on many waters range from 45-52”
– Michigan Muskie Alliance has proposed a 46” minimum size limit
Factors that need to be addressed concerning stocked waters:
– We have a limited number of stocked waters with approximately 34 waters that are regularly stocked
– The statewide MSL for these waters should be set at a size that allows these fish to be recycled for many years through catch and release
– MMA has proposed a 46” minimum size limit
– A recent study in Canada showed that caught and released muskellunge had NO catch and release mortality and not the high percentage that was presumed from a previous study where holding conditions contributed dramatically to mortality
– Muskellunge are a desirable gamefish and create a relatively popular sportfishery in virtually every water where present in fishable numbers (economic impact = tourism is increased in these areas)
– The cost of culturing Muskellunge is significantly higher than other species that are better suited to “put-and-take”

Thanks to those that have sent an email. If you haven't sent one to all of the managers yet please take the time to compose a short email encouraging them to support increased size limits and a one fish per season bag limit.
We have the support of the Esocid Committee but not the managers, it's important to have your voice heard in this matter.
Thanks.
Will,
I received this response fron Jay Wesley after I sent my email today:
Thanks Mr. Lesner for your opinion.
By the way, did muskie alliance have a meeting and announce potential changes in muskellunge regulations? We are getting several folks emailing that they support the one fish and 46 inch size limit. Thanks! Jay
My response was the following:
There was information circulated, the ban on spearing is something I have had an interest in for a long time. I dark house speared for years but never speared a musky. Some very large fish have been speared in recent years and the waste of killing a large breeding musky bothers me greatly. Michigan could do so much to become destination for musky fisherman from around the country. Areas of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Ontario attract musky fisherman because of their quality fisheries, these fisherman( I am one of them) spend millions of dollars every year. I hope this could happen in Michigan, it might take 20 years and in that time I would be an old man but it would surely make me happy. Thanks again.

Response emailed back to me from Nicholas Popoff:
Hi Ed,
Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Muskellunge are a very important species to the State of Michigan and it is nice to hear of your support. Several other constituents share your position and your comments will be considered when we discuss muskellunge management this fall and next year.
Thanks,
Nick
PS: Baker, Borgeson and Chiemlewski all came back undeliverable.

They came back undeliverable for me, also. 🙄
Sorry, I should have confirmed all of these before posting. Apparently the spreadsheet hasn't been corrected with updated email addresses.

Hi Tom,Thanks for your comments; you’ve obviously done your homework. FYI – there hasn’t been any official unanimous decision made by our fishery managers. Most (emergency actions and some others are excluded) statewide regulation decisions, such as the increasing minimum size limits for muskellunge, need to be formally proposed to the biologists for decision. This has not occurred with musky regulations. I think you are referencing an informal email that was distributed to some managers (not all – for example, me) without specific data and information about proposed regulatory actions which may have been communicated by Kregg Smith at the last Coolwater Committee meeting. In short, we greatly appreciate your input and it will definitely be conveyed to the rest of our decision making staff.
Nick
Nice job getting the word around.
These folks get all sorts of input/requests from special interest groups. I suggest that everybody include a picture of a nice Michigan fish plus a personal invitation to go muskie fishing. If you've already sent your input send a follow-up ps thanking the legislator for his/her response, invite them to go fishing and include a fish picture.
Don't underestimate the power of a picture of a nice muskie.
Got this from Nick Popoff, the rest are just thanks you's.
Hi J.P.,
Thanks for taking the time to provide your thoughtful comments regarding muskellunge regulations. As I’m sure you’re aware, DNR managers will discussing various options regarding muskellunge regulations over the next year. Your comments will be provided to the rest of our managers.
Take care,
Nick
