Sorry for the lenghty post but My brother-in-law and wife went out today with friends on Lake St Clair for cruising and Gull Island etc… We talked about meeting up for a bit to say hi since I was out fishing anyway. Well, around 130pm I noticed way across the lake some serious smoke and thought it only was something from land. It wasn't! The 20ft boat my brother-in-law and wife were on caught on fire and exploded within 3 minutes. They noticed heat coming from the engine and heard a loud boom. Immediately the boat's engine was in serious flames. They all reached for the life vest's under the seat to find them slightly on fire. Within seconds everyone reacted quickly and threw lit vests in the water and jumped on them to save their lives. The boat quickly was completely engulfed in flames. They were in 12ft of water and they swam to 2 different boats. Everyone survived and the boat by this time was covered in flames up to 6ft high and completely destroyed. The coast guard reacted quickly to put out flames and i've been told the boat was completely destroyed. It's shocking how fast danger can strike on the water and please all check your gas line's! They all were very lucky today and thanks to the other boats nearby to act fast and help out. My brother-in-law and wife are not big boaters and I can assume it will be a long time before they step back on a boat. I was wondering why he wasn't answering my text to meet up and after seeing so much smoke today it's really crazy how fast a good day could have turned into a tragic day! Be careful!

Ya scary out on the water sometimes. My dad had his annual tourney today out of holland todayand he was scared of his 34 ft boat tippin over sideways. Huge fiasco with the weather and them aiding a smaller boat following them back to the pier heads after the tourney was called because of the bad weather. Took them 2 hours to get back in when it should of taken them around 20 min.

Wow! There's a good reminder to keep your safety gear in good repair and easy to access…

Glad they're OK.

Scott, glad to hear everyone was O.K. My fishing partner and I always have are vest's over the backs of the seat's, so you can grab them quickly in a emergency.

yeah it was crazy talking to my bro-in-law and he said at first he tried to grab fire extinguisher but flames were already so high and fire spread within seconds. The life vest's were next to the back seat and some were melting as they grabbed them so the girls got them and he jumped off with no vest in 3 footers and had to tread water for 5 minutes before the boat got to him. He waited and made sure all the women were off first and then jumped. He said he could believe how fast it went up and the flames were so high within minutes. The boat was a 20ft Formula 1 and in great shape but now completely destroyed. He said there's no way to even salvage it.

I asked him if he felt any muskies below his feet? I need all the help I can get! Ha!
