Imo LSC is becoming a world class fishery much like many of the Canadian waters and protected waters of other states. To open it to spearing especially with a 42in size limit and a daily fish limit could greatly impact this fishery in a short time. We are trying to improve the quality of muskie fishing in Michigan and having been chasing these girls since the early 2000's I never caught more then 1 fish in a season so we are no where near a need to open any waters to spearing. When that was first spread around last week the quote from someone in the DNR was simply "Don't worry about it". MDAA has made more enemies than it has friends among those in the DNR and NRC. Combine that with how it's written, complete lack of scientific basis or understanding, and it's not going anywhere.
I also think it is a terrible time for them to try to get this passed. I'm thinking the DNR is too busy with all the new muskie proposals discussed in the 'Coffee and Conversation' meetings to worry about this. Also, with the new outbreak of VHS on LSC, it definitely isn't the time to open the lake to more harvest.

Did someone at the DNR really say "allowing muskie spearing on LSC will have no negative impact on the overall muskie fishery"?
I think Holmes twisted those words. I believe what, the now retired Mike Thomas said, was that he didn't have the data to say spearing would or would not have a negative impact. Obviously any dead fish is a negative impact, and I really don't want to help their cause but it would have been smarter to say.. with one fish per season bag limit and a 42" MSL a spearing season would not increase exploitation beyond 10%.
