Has anyone ever met Eric Sharp? Seems to me that he can't write an article that I don't have a problem with…
Hamilton posted this over on MI-Sportsmen and I had to respond…
Mr Sharp writes:
Noting that Pittiglio's 41 1/2 -pounder was unusually large for July, Mike Thomas, a research biologist at the DNR laboratory in Harrison Township, said: "Can you imagine the girth on that fish by October?" That's when muskies go on a feeding binge to prepare for the lean winter months ahead.
Really? Feeding binge to prepare for lean winter months?
I'm certain Mike Thomas wasn't saying that muskies go on a feeding binge in the fall to prepare for a lean winter. This is a cold blooded creature that has limited food needs once their metabolism slows. I'm sure what he was actually talking about is that she would have substantial egg mass by October that would make her girth considerably larger. She will be feeding more heavily in September because of warm water (higher metabolism) and the need for additional calories to build eggs.
Almost forgot… the state record GL Muskellunge is not 49lb 12oz it is actually 48#.
I posted the article earlier in the Area 1 fishing. That was only to keep similiar articles together. I see Sharp and other writers at fishery meetings around the state and have talked with him on phone up at Grayling. It will be interesting to see how Sharp will write about the developing muskie fishery on Lake Margrethe as his home is on the lakeshore.
