Has anyone fished Loud Dam Pond. Not looking for any real specifics just water color and weed type reports. Should be a pretty good crop of 7 year old fish in there with a second nice crop of 3 year old fish following behind them. From what I can find I do not see a lot of homes on this lake. Any help? Mike and Michelle

Steve , north east corner of the state . Tawas city is close. It is one of several impoundments on the Ausable river. Mike

Never fished it but I'm pretty familiar with the area. There's a lookout on 65 that overlooks Loud Dam Pond, near The Bear Store for anyone else familiar with the area. We stop there every time we visit Lake Winyah in Alpena. The water is stained with plenty of timber throughout, its an impoundment of the AuSable. Looks awesome though, every time we stop we talk about how we need to fish it. From what we see in mid May there is very little fishing pressure, in fact I don't think I have ever seen a boat, canoe, or kayak out there. That could be good or bad. Now that we know Muskies are there we will have to put it on the list.

I have read a couple of reports I found by searching on the net. It seems there is spot known as crank bait graveyard. Snags abound in one particular spot in front of some sand hill. I have a great lure retriever so Im not concerned about that. How about houses? Is this lake like wilderness or is it developed? Mike

From what sections of it i've ice fished, it's pretty remote, reminds me of the UP or Canada. A few cabins here and there, definately more woods on the shorelines that cabins. Tons and tons of cover for the fish.

I've always wondered about this impoundment as well. We always go up to East Tawas every 3rd week in July and I've wanted to fish it but haven't had the time or know if I can get Ranger in at the ramp….

Careful with the launch……can be hairy. Have had to get pulled out before. 4wheel should be good to go. Cook has a better launch and has good potential too"

Fished it just once, absolutely beautiful and definitely wilderness. Pretty sure no homes on the lake, just a couple cabins that you won't hardly even notice. I fished it late May, it had spots with heavy curly leaf and some broad leaf cabbage that apparently grows well later on. Good visibililty- the stain was pretty much all tannic, not mud or algae or other junk. Just transparent brown.

The launch is a gravel/sand bank to the side of the dam face, it drops off pretty quick and was plenty deep. On that day I thought it would be no trouble for a big boat like a Ranger, but maybe the ramp can get washed out or jacked up by someone spinning their 2 WD??

You can see by looking at Google maps from the satellite view that there is basically nothing on the lake like someone mentioned. I wouldn't worry about boating traffic as it looks like mostly forest being next to state land

Thanks guys! I'll be up there the 3rd week of July and will take a ride over (with the boat) to see if its doable launching and not getting stuck with a 20ft boat. I've got 4WD and 5.3L but you'll never know if its been torn up prior to visit. If I do get in I'll be sure to fish it and pass on any reports. I wonder if the ramp is maintained or fixed every so often. I see on satellite there is no dock and just a "dirt/gravel" ramp

Sounds like this is going to be a great adventure. We have the Toyota FJ Cruiser with the little boat. I could launch that without a launch. I am sure we will not need our 18 foot Star Craft for that one as its only 400 some acres. I am getting geeked up about this lake now. Just the lack of houses has me all giddy inside 😀 😀 [smilie=2thumbsup.gif] [smilie=applause.gif] . Add in camping on an Island, 7 year old Muskies, Nice Pike and Walleye for shore lunch?????? OH BABY!!!! We may hit it next week if the weather permits us at least two dry nights. Thanks for all the input guys you are loved(Queen thanks you) and very appreciated by me. Mike

Sounds like your lure retriever will get a workout again just minus the benningtons, hopefully some well fed 7 yr olds too again 😉 good luck guys! ( I've been waiting for Cooke and loud to age, a east side friend who had a place near tawas said they were very easy on the eyes and ears:)

My mistake 937 acres. I thought the 9 was a 4. Old eyes don't see like they used to. Still we used the little boat on Fluke Lake and that was over 1200. I wont need our big boat there.Mike

Lots of stumps, lots of people stuck at the "launch" and quite a few more people fishing in the summer there than you would think. Just to let you know it's not quite paradise…

Thats good, Im glad people get stuck at the launch. We wont. Wood plus weeds equals Muskies so the stumps wont bother us at all. But thanks for the warning. Mike

Haven't fished it since the 80's. Caught a lot of pike and smallmouth. Didn't have muskie in it back then. If you like to fish fallen timber then you will love it.
