I talked to a guy in canada years ago that used rats as pike bait, he used a leader with two trebbles and held it on the rat with rubberbands.is this legal in the states?? what about baby ducks?? I already know im a heartless bastard, but I figure its the same as using suckers, its what they naturaly eat and its all poop in the end right. so did I get anyones immagination going?? The best bait is babies stole from dingos. Tip – a fresh diaper means a temporary surface bait.

Remember to match your color patterns with the fishing conditions, such as white toy poodles and black toy poodles. [smilie=fear.gif]

poodles, they would probably work well, but who would want to be stuck in a boat with one of them.

From the MI DNR website

Any fish (except lampreys, live carp, and goldfish) and frogs may be used as bait when legally taken and possessed.

Serious question. I'm having difficulty finding suckers up here but I can catch perch easily on the lakes I fish.

Can I use perch on a quickstrike rig effectively and does it work?

I haven't tried it but think it would work with larger perch, not so well with medium to small perch. I think a legal bass or eye would be a better bet if you can find those.

For a few years I lived on a lake in Mason County we used live perch as bait for northern pike under bobbers and with tip-ups. They worked well, always available, and free. I made a smaller version of the quickstrike rig with a small inline spinner at the front, but I moved and our lake home was sold before I could use it. This was 20-years before anyone I knew fish for muskie. Let us know how your rigs work. Today you have small tackle component options we never had years ago.

I use Panfish all the time when I use live bait (sometimes trying to get a fish to go) make sure you clip the tails a little that keeps them swimming harder and moving less. I have lip-hooked gills and perch on the back of a spoon and retrieved them like a jerkbait with some success as well. such fun…

I admit, I've never heard that trick. But what a good tip! Thanks, Kev. Do it with suckers too?

Yep sometimes I even clip the pelvic fins if they are bigger because they can still "wiggle" swim. One of my favorite tricks is to take a sunfish, belly hook it, and then completely clip the tail with a four foot lead to the float. They swim like hell trying to right themselves as they sink down which makes them thrash around in a circle under the float. They dont last as long but man they make a commotion doing it!

Learned the fin and tail clipping technique with big sucks for Pike on tip ups…..very effective. The wheels are turning, but no traction at all. Great for big sucks and false flags. I need to see three things in my life to die a happy man. Tigers winning the world series , lions win the super bowl, and Kevin landing a Michigan super fish on a big five of diamonds with perch trailer…….brilliant! Pure cyberlunge nostalgia! This could be the year! [smilie=2thumbsup.gif]

Learned the tail trick from my gramps, though we usually take a bite out with our teeth, tastes like crap but highly effective. [smilie=2c.gif]

I think it also puts a little more vibration out. We use that trick on tip-ups. Especially when the suckers are big.
