Each year, especially in the spring, a number of muskies escape through the Lake Ovid dam. MMA has organized efforts with the DNR in years past to capture, tag, and relocate these fish back into the lake.
Although no great numbers of muskies have been observed below the dam yet this year, the high water in the creek does make it tough to spot fish. Tonight just 3 fish were seen, and it's hard to guess how many others were hiding out- but probably no more than another 8-10 at very most. (?)
This is an invitation to see who & when anyone might be available to meet at Ovid to coordinate a round-up. Not sure if the numbers justify an all-out effort right now, but at least you can fish too if you do make the trip.
Please respond if you are interested, and if there are times you know you could make it. Just looking for a show of hands right now- weekends or weeknights. Generally looking at a 2 hour or so time block. Thanks!
The 18th is probably later than you'd want to do this but it would work well with the tournament that day. Or even if a crew does get around and do this before then, maybe it wouldn't hurt to comb over it again on that day? I'm not overly familiar with the situation here so I'm not sure if it would even do much good, I'm just kind of thinking out loud.
OK! We're on for Wednesday evening May 8. Let's meet at 5:30 at the <url url="[Permission to view this media is denied]
">** you do not have permission to see this link ** (if you are not coming by boat). Bring waders if you have can (not necessary) and your landing net (necessary).
Let me know if you will be there for sure– and any questions get ahold of me here, or phone 517.285.0680
Thanks to everyone who responded here and in PM, see ya Wednesday.
Thanks Brent!
And a reminder to everyone- come in the main park entrance if you will be arriving by land. We will meet at the beach entrance to unlock the gate to the dam (and lock it behind us).
If you will be fishing early and arriving by sea, please don't check out the spillway before the troops arrive! Once the fish get spooked they often hole up inside the concrete box and we can't get at em. Thanks!
