[quote="Mark D. Platt"]I thought I had. If I didn't, I apologize. My intention was to post in the members area. Even when I look know it says "members discussion". Please clairify
I think he is asking for you to name the lodge and give a review of the week and the customer service with examples.
Yes, exactly. Just not in clear english… I can see how that didn't make sense. 😀
Mark – You can name the place and owner here in the members if you want. I know that I would be interested to know so I can avoid the experience. I do understand if you don't want to name the place.
The cheapest package i see on AML site is 789 dollars, if you don't bring your own boat. Is that right? or am i not seein it on the page/ The place we stayed at the first time was like 465 or something.
More power to you if you can justify spending that much money for a trip to canada, but most shield lakes have such predictable structure it is easy to find fish for the most part. The part that helps having someone like AML to help you out is eliminating a lot of water, but you can usually find a lot of info online as well. Or from people up at the lake the week before.

Where did you stay at for 465 on Eagle? Some of the other prices I found were $550, 600, 615, 660, 899, 959.

Big Eagle lodge, my mistake it was 485 for us. 465 was how much it cost for our trip this summerWe did their 3 people for 1 18ft boat.
Yeah I checked that place out and it looks pretty nice. At $545 (4 people, 2 boats) it would be a lot cheaper than AML. Do the boats come with a bow mount trolling motor?
The boats dont, but they all have 50 hp motors.
The guy that owns the place is a jerk.. And steals our walleyes and cleans them his way without even telling us.. which i thought was weird..
Then if you bring your own boat you have to pay for any gas over 5 gallons..
If we go back to eagle we were looking at this place

Someone else from MMA goes here, and posted some of their pics from there last year, which are on their photo section too. Not sure what their members name is.
The rates aren't bad, a little more, but for 3 people it would be nice.

I checked that place out as well and it looks really nice; I love the location on the lake and the upgrade boats are exactly what we would want. I might have to look into that place a little more.
I misunderstood a previous portion of this thread, but I think I understand it now. Here is my review and specific examples.
The cabin leaked water in both bathrooms, including the toilet. If you walked into one bathroom, you had toilet water on your feet. The first time this happened I thought someone had missed the seat and got the floor wet. Water in the other bathroom was being soaked up by the wood paneling on the wall.
Our group had 6 people. Two of them booked guides for two days. All of us booked under the Housekeeping plan. We paid $729 per adult. I upgraded the boats for an additional $300. AML includes 18 gallons of gas in the housekeeping plan. What they don't tell you is tha the gas the guide uses comes out of your 18 gallons. If the guides use more than 18 gallons, you are paying for their gas in addition to the guide fees. Going past 18 gallons is easy. Dockside boat price $4.75 also unadvertised.
All guests (regardless of plan) are invited to a fish fry on Wednesday night's. It is advertised on the website. Three people from our group went to this fish fry. They were told to take their food and leave.
Prior to the trip, there was a thread on Muskie First were someone had just returned from a trip to an unnamed lodge. They claimed there were issues with the bills regarding gas. They also claimed people on the housekeeping plans felt as if they were second class customers, when compared to people on the American plans. My experience makes me believe it was AML.
My son went on a walleye guide trip with the owners son, Danny. Danny had several moments of swearing like a madman and was encouraged to stop from a friend of mine who was on the trip. (My son was on the guide trip with two of my buddies, while I fished for Muskies). Danny actually told my friends that, "these must be some good friends to put up with my kids shit." Word for word. Needless to say my son was hurt by those comments. Fortunately, he is smarter than Danny and knew he was dealing with an idiot.
We told Steve that we wanted to check out on Friday night, so we could leave early Saturday. We told him when we would be there. We ended up waiting for two hours. He was at a fish fry with the guides.
At the lodge, the number of F bombs unleashed by Steve throughout the week were countless. It didn't matter if kid was there or not.
At the end of the trip an envelope is passed around for tips. Suggestions on tips are listed on the envelope. For guides per person was listed $25 to $100. Dockboys wer $20-$40 per person. The dockboys were by far the best workers in the place.
Finally, and maybe most disturbing is the attitude toward Muskies. On two occassions I heard references to "snagging them in the face" on the eight. Hardly, a conservation practice. In fairness, one time was Steve joking, so I ignored it. However, I heard it again later from a repeat customer who actually had used this techinique twice while with a guide.
Unfortunate Mark, I would hope that wouldn't shy you away from checking out other resorts and other lakes in the future. That is a great area with a ton of great muskie lakes nearby as well.
I have never been there so I can't judge, I just knew the prices were always too rich for my blood.
Ya Jason, that was the place we were gonna go to this year, but last minute decided to head back to canyon. I do wanna go to birch dale the next time i head up to Eagle though.

Mark,
You are correct about the muskies1st posting and it was AML and Steve Herbeck actually did respond to the post and then the entire post was pulled by a mod. I have been to AML twice and it certainly isn't a place for kids and that is a bad practice for them as I will go to another lodge when I want to take certain clients or my kids to Eagle. I also agree that Danny is worse than his Father and the future of their camp is at risk.
The main reason I go to AML is their guide Cal and he is one of the best guides that I have ever hired. The camp is truly focused on muskies and the location is pretty good. I just love the lake and if anyone has found another good resort please post it up. I will post my AML report after I get back and I am sorry that you had such a negative experience.
I can put you in contact with my B in law, he lives in MN and took my son walleye fishing there a few weeks ago. Has friends that own a place on the water on LOW. They caught and released some decent walleye, one 29". Caught some very nice Pike too.
Broke my foot 2 weeks ago, just in time for my Baraga adventure, and did more scouting than fishing out in the Michigamme, Sylvania tract, and NW areas.
Steve where do you fish in the WI/NW U.P. area?
Bill, we go to the Chippewa Flowage outside Hayward, WI. It's about 16,000 acres, rock bars, sand bars, boulders, stumps, cranberry bars, floating bogs you can find about anything. We leave from a friends house in Wanataw, IN. south of Michigan City, IN. Itakes about 10 to 11 hours with stopping for breakfast and gas about 3 times and were hauling the boats.
Here's the part where I get in trouble we stay at Indian Trail Resort owned by John, Brenda & Pat Dettloff. indiantrailresort.com
I know the whole thing about Sprays fish and I stay out of it, never had a conversation with John about it and don't care. Think Spray was a blowhard drunk and all those guy's at that time were full of it. But the location of the resort is key to fishing the east side of the flowage. Your only minutes away from great spots. The resort is family oriented. There are alot of guides around there Ty Sennett and abunch of others. Cost for 5 of us that went last year, 3 bdr cottage, screened in porch, dock 50' from cabin, $900.00 for the week. We bring our own groceries, everyone takes turn cooking supper one night, one night fish fry and one night clean out the fridge. Stove, fridge, microwave, dishes, pots & pans, silverware all there. Bring radio good classic rock station and fish reports. Get gas at the dock $3 to$4 a gal. Tough place to fish, stay close to old river bed, get Hot Spots Map.
I think we should turn this thread into how bad Canadian's suck. My grandpa used to take a trip to Canada every year to fish for trout with his long time Canadian friends, said the Canadians would outfish them 10:1 and wouldn't for the life of them give them any information as to what they they where doing. Pure Douchebaggery.
But seriously, sad to hear about the Eagle lake trip, it amazes me sometimes the lack of consciousness some people have when it comes to filtering themselves.
I'm excited to get to lake of the woods, I just hope that we get there before the water temps start to drop and the summer pattern fades. I just want to be able to burn bucktails and topwaters over conventional spots and not have to worry about fish moving to the deeps breaks and busting out the SpinnerBaits and Bulldawgs
😯
Also sad to hear about the beer prices, didn't think I would have to resort to drinking High Life the whole trip.
Well almost all of these camps are owned by americans. Most canadians in that area have no way of being able to afford a fishing camp. It is poverty city up there.
Chris, depending on where you are going the temperatures in the lake will already start to be getting lower. Some parts of LOTW though have been in the high 70's. But by now a lot of areas north of the border are starting to have cool low 50' degree nights and high 60 to low 70' degree temps.
When exactly are you going? You will prob have to spend the first bit of time working a lot of typical areas and trying a lot of different retrieve styles.
We went in July and were forced to have to slow our topwater down to the point of force feeding them to get them to strike.
Everything was ahead this year, and july fished like August as far as the walleye's went as well. Hopefully you guys find some active fish
