I was going to save this for after Christmas, it’s not the best gift… hopefully a great holiday season will offset this news.
It is now official, 2006 was the last year of the Iowa program. This is disappointing, to say the least, however it will allow MMA to allocate funds that were always intended for Iowa to different MMA programs or to the DNR. We will be working with the Wolf Lake hatchery to provide any needed assistance at the hatchery or with other projects that may arise concerning muskellunge management. They're making a wish list of improvements for the hatchery as I type this.
Because of this we’re going to pitch some big ideas to the esocid committee and the hatchery. The Iowa program started as a big idea and it was an incredible success over the past five years. Roughly 35,000 fall fingerling muskies were stocked since 2002 because of the Iowa program. We spent roughly $9000 dollars on the Iowa program in five years.
Just how huge was this program?
– $9000 would purchase 750 12" fall fingerling muskies from Minnesota Muskie Farm
– 35,000 12" fall fingerling muskies from Minnesota Muskie Farm would have cost us $420,000
You all deserve a BIG thank you for supporting Michigan Muskie Alliance from all the muskie anglers in Michigan.
