It's a Canadian show eh, and in this episode, they're on the Ottawa and catch a couple of real giant hawgs. I don't care too much for some things I see (the first release seemed premature, I'd say), and the big fish were not held very expertly, but their intentions were good, and the fish are AMAZING! The guide, Mark Thorpe, seems not very articulate, and has some crazy crackpot ideas he expounds at the end ("the moon pushes and pulls in the weather"), but he put them on some big fish!
It's a 25 minute episode, so make some popcorn first:

Marc is a unique individual, and he does have his interesting therories… After a few days he will have you really thinking about them… It is very speciall water. Two yeasrs ago, one guy boated 2 58 inch class fish within a couple hours casting.
I have been on that water 8 days, have seen 8 fish in the MID Fiftys, and boated a 49, 53.5, and 54.5. I can't think of many bodies of water that has that potential. Marc's clients boated 44 fish over 50 inches in 2008.

The second fish is NOT a 58"er. Take a look right at 15:39. The nose is back at about 3", then when the camera scans down the fish, she's just over 55".
Jim,
It would be completely uncharacteristic for Marc to over estimate the size of a fish. I know Marc fairly well. Marc doe not pinch tails, and he always rounds down on length. With my three larger fish caught while fishing with him, I would call the 49 a 50, the 53 a 54, and the 54, a 55. He would not call my 55 a 55. He said it is 54 and some change…
Nobody except the guys in the boat know how long those fish really were, but I would bet money they are what they say they are…
Marc was Muskie Canad President for many years, and he has been fishing those waters for over 15 years. He swears to this day that he has not caught a true 50 pound fish. Not even the 58s hit 50 in his estimation.
Yah, those were for sure 57 and 58 (I might even give the second 59… I'll bet if it was on a bump board it would have been over 58) and both releases looked good. Dad was there w/ Marc two days after those fish were caught a couple years ago.
For sure a "different" guy but he's on some special water. Dad has had similar experiences w/ Marc as Chad noted, I think in a couple trips out there in 7 or 8 days they have caught 5 or 6 over 50 and up to 55".
It sounds like he's confusing the moon influence with "water" and saying weather…
Yeah, I can be easily convinced his moon-weather statement was due to on-camera nerves; he does seem to be trying to be overly articulate and missing a little, especially at the beginning and ending.
Great Canadian fish, eh? No doubt. I'd be ecstatic catching either one, no matter what the ruler said. Beauty. [smilie=applause.gif]
I know Marc is a very well-respected and well-known muskie hunter. But in the vid, he is asking the other guy if the fish is at zero. That's why I have to question it. Don't get me wrong… Those fish are HUGE. I would give my left nut to get a fish around 55, let alone 2 in 30min.
Watch the vid again and tell me if my eyes were playing tricks on me. I rewound it about 15 times.
