Try to avoid this: Tonight I cut my right pinkie finger in order to push out a bunch of puss and I can see that the scar tissue, and loss of feeling in that finger, will be a problem.
Two weeks ago I poked/cut that finger, deep, while cleaning fish. A fish bone did it, actually, I was cleaning fish too fast and without a glove. It cooked a for a few days, swollen up and infected, but it went down and I thought it over. Not so. It became sore at the joint a couple days ago. Dark blue at the joint and I can't extend the pinkie all the way anymore. So I sliced it and sure enough I got yellow/green puss.
Feels better but I have a hole in my didget. I can see the scar tissue lining itself up along the inside of my finger. It looks like it's gonna be like another finger that was torn long and deep by a dog that rightfully chewed on me. If so, the scar tissue will begin to pull the finger over, just like the last time I had one of these infections.
My point is…I suggest you wear a glove while cleaning fish.
I'm gonna try to make this thread useful…..
Don't allow minimizing downtime to take the place of being appropriately careful, even cleaning fish. Having this mindset means avoiding avoidable injury, all the way up to you not losing your life on the water. Have the proper procedures, state of the art tools, and then do it right.
I have a couple "I almost died" fishing stories that illuminate the point, but I'll spare you the de-tales. In every instance, I should have been more careful.
