I saw this posted in the "early season c/r forum" but I didn't want to say anything because it is a little off the subject. But anyway, something was said about a "tough bite period" down in Indiana, when approx is this because I have a trip planned there allready, and I have a feeling thats when it is. AK

It was a tough bite last sunday. Window lasted for two hours first light till 8:30 then it was lights out. My wife got a 43 on a bucktail over 17 feet of water on Skinner lake. Ill be there tomorrow fishing with Tom Munson . Most early season its a tough bite as waters are still very cold fish are just starting to get hungry. No Lake has a great bite until water temps get over 55. Get Webster on a pre front with water temps at 68 to 70 and you may see 100 fish in one day. Fish it now and see 2 maybe three on average. Theres a guy down there that has been doing very well during the warmer than average temps by slow cranking Tuff Shads deep. To morrow late in the day it will be a pre frontal condition but water temps are cold so I hope to maybe connect once, twice would be cool but wishfull thinking. I m just glad to be out fishing and checking out this new lake. Tom is a good fisherman so maybe with our combined knowledge we might get a couple. Kingfisher

While the fish are spawning the bite can be tough but there are still plenty of fish to be caught. In the Hoosier lakes that happens through the month of April. You can avoid the slow times by fishing different lakes. A key to avoid this is to chase pre-spawn fish, fortunately they have some diverse lakes down there that make this possible. Pre-spawn fish can be tough one day and the next day you'll put five or six in the boat. With the density they stock Webster and Barbee finding fish shouldn't be too tough and I expect to contact at least ten fish in an 8 hour day. The pre-spawn period can provide some of the best action of the year, it can also be VERY frustrating if you are on the wrong water or fishing the wrong areas. Once into late April you'll have lakes with mostly post-spawn fish that will start to act like normal muskies.

ok, so basically don't worry about when I'm going down there. April 7&8 is when I am planning. By then, hopefully the water temp will be on the rise. Ak

April 7/8 will probably have muskies spawning on Webster and Barbee. Tippecanoe and James will be behind and you should find those fish still in pre-spawn. The density of muskies is lower in Tippy/James so you'll have fewer contacts but there are some BIG fish in Tippy.
