Hi all, Michelle and I are thinking we want to try for Muskies one more time before years end. We have good ice at our house and this generally means there is ice on some of the more shallow lakes that Have Muskies in them. Im thinking a trip to Osterhout or Campau. Maybe even Lower Crooked. Could be a blast to get several of us out on a lake this winter. Mike and Michelle
Sounds like a great idea! My local bait shop has mostly smallish shiners and suckers, though they might have a few spearing-sized suckers I'd be happy to buy (in fact I've been thinking about buying them all, all winter, to reduce the spearing impact). I have lots of tip ups to share but may have to beef up leaders etc. for muskies versus my usual smaller to mid size pike in winter.
W e are thinking Lower Crooked or Campau as they are kind of centrally located . Lower Crooked is pretty much right in the middle and has a good population of fish. It fairly shallow has lots of weeds and should be pretty easy to fish with Tip ups and jigging rods. Michelle and I are thinking the 26th as we cant do this saturday. Mike
Well I spoke too soon again. Michelles new job has her at the bottom of the totem pole. She now has to work the 26th so that date just went down in flames. Im thinking Steves Idea for January is looking better for a group fish on the ice. Michelle and I will have to go during the week if we go at all this month except for this coming Sunday.
This coming Sunday the 19th is open for us. Im not sure if any of us can get ready that fast. Lower Crooked should have plenty of Ice by now and by Sunday should have 6 inches. I know its kind of fast and we can always wait until January and coordinate a better outing. Hot food on the ice, some body brings a quad to ferry everyone out and back etc. Your thoughts? Michelle and I will get out at least once in December and can have tip ups and a small hut ready by the 19th. Mike
I would love to join you guys in January if something gets coordinated
Im gonna try to get on the Grand or Red Cedar river in Lansing this weekend for some pike as long as the ice is safe, I dont go to the flowing areas, gotta find the spots where it pools up away from the actual stream but you can get some hog pike in those spots this time of year
Im hopin I can find some suckers somewhere now that theres ice and more demand for them, those 3 or 4 inch pike shiners just dont do it for me
Maybe the lake of choice should be Austin.
1st, we take all the good spots away from the spearers. If we can't take them, we camp right next to them and offer the muskies real suckers instead of the carved hunks of wood they have.
2nd, we set up 100 tip-ups. We need all the people we can to help so we can stay legal. The muskies will eat the suckers and get a hook in their jaw. Then, they won't even be interested in looking at another "meal" for awhile.
