So I was heading to Murray lake from East Lansing yesterday and was about 10 minutes away when I looked back and noticed my boat trailer was looking funky, I pulled over and further inspection revealed that the rear joint had broken and all of the boat's weight was shifted ackwardly leaving me with a pretty bum trailer. Long story short I managed to get the damn thing back to East Lansing and now I'm stuck with the task of getting it fixed to the point where I can travel back to Traverse City. Anyways, anyone have any advice as to where to take it or what kind of shop to call? It really just needs a quick weld to regain the structural integrity, but I'm not sure who would be able to do that…

Get in touch w/ Matt and Jim tenHaaf. If one of them can't help I'm sure they know someone that can.

Never used them, though.

That's a bit of a drive from Lansing to Murray everytime you go, do you ever go to Ovid? Wouldn't that be really close? Even if you can make a minor fix you wouldn't have to worry bout long travel distance

Hey Chris,
I had the exact same thing happen to me last year. I called my favorite boat and motor dealer and explained the problem. He gave me the name of a welder who had extensive experience in fixing boat trailers in my area. I told the welder to over-engineer the repair so that it would never happen again, and it has been fine since.

Thanks guys, I called around and have some prospects (one guy loaned out his welder) but it should be easier than I thought.

Maybe he doesn't enjoy frustration and ignominy as much as I do. 😀

I had to drive a friend home to muskegon, so I figured I might as well get some casts in on the way home…

I had plans to fish ovid every day this week, that fell through though…

Ok, so the guy at Bannasch wants me to get the boat off the trailer for him to work on it. Is it possible to beach the boat at the state park on Lake Ovid?

Yes, but… there's no need; there are docks where the rental boats are kept, both at the beach and near the launch, and I'm not talking about the dock AT the launch. All the rental boats were removed yesterday.

If the welding can be done in a few hours, I don't think anyone will know/care if you dock your boat at one for awhile. Go fishing while you wait.

Sorry, Chris… Just saw this. Dang… it's too bad you drove it back to E Lansing. You were 1/2 hr away from help! Matt (or my brother Aaron) could've easily put a bead of weld on whatever you would've needed as I was working down in Portage for the day. They even have some gantry
cranes in the shop that would've lifted your boat off the trailer if need be.

I guess for future reference….My brother Aaron and I work at a shop in Wayland. We do a good deal of custom fabrication in both steel and aluminum. Give Jim or me a shout in a pinch and I'm sure we can help somehow.

Hey thanks guys, appreciate you offering to help. My boat is now officially floating in Ovid for a day, maybe two 😯 the fog was just lifting off of a dead calm lake as I was leaving to take the trailer to the Welder, didn't want to leave it…Now I have an excuse to fish today, tonight, and tomorrow morning!!! Yes!!!!
