I usually start toppin around late may, or when i tend to see fish breaking surface and becoming more active.
When temps begin reaching 65 -68 degrees has worked well for me in past on certain waters and under certain conditions.
So when do you start toppin? How early is too early?

someone told me when the lilacs bloom!!! I just use the old 60 degree surface temp plan even though that can probably be misleading. If it feels right throw it.

I've seen topwater action when the water temps were in the mid 50's.
You won't know if it will work if you don't throw it!!

I have only caught one musky on a topwater and that was on opening day a few years ago, 41-3/4".

It's only too late or too early if your topwater bounces off the ice. I threw one at the Ice Out for a while, you just need to match conditions with the right bait.

Went blugill fishing Sunday and found surface temps between 63-64 degrees. My bass fishing friend (Ohio) reported the same on a different lake. Seems early to be that warm but I doubt the topwater plugs will bounce off the ice 😀
