I'm starting to question if I have the right hooks on the crank baits I've been making. I've lost the last 3 muskies that have bit. Which is a big deal since these are Antrim chain fish where bites are few and far between. I'm using 4/0 eagle claw curved point hooks. I keep them sharp. I have a bucktail with this type of hook and I seem to never lose a fish with it, so I thought I'd try them on my cranks. Is there a better hook for cranks ?
Too much unknown to offer an educated response. Are you casting or trolling? Are the fish not getting hooked or are they hooked for a while then getting off? One thing with crankbaits when casting is that the fish get the whole head in their mouth and the lip of the bait basically acts as a guard for the front hook. If they hold onto the head then open their mouth mid fight the bait will just slide right out. I'm not really a fan of the curved point hook, as Nick noted the Eagle Claw 774 is a great hook.
I've been casting. These are only 7 inch baits I've made. I might just be looking for a scapegoat. The first loss the fish was on for a couple of head shakes, then gone. The second was on up to the boat until it rocketed out of the water, did a back flip and threw the hooks, the most recent one, the fish hit harder than any fish I've ever hooked. The jolt surprised me , I set the hook hard and got nothing. So I'm losing them every possible way. I'll give the eagle claw 774 a try. Thanks!
