A future MMA member from Ludington was committed to a business meeting weekend on the same weekend of the Michigan Muskie Show, but he did make it to the Milwaukee Muskie Expo. His comment, "I did sneak over to the Milwaukee Muskie Expo. Pretty good show. Bought a couple lures, got ideas for paint and skirt schemes for the lures we make ourselves here." I had asked him the question, "Any news of our muskie with the tip-up and spearing guys?" His reply was not good. "Word is everyone and their brother has speared a short one. I heard of one legal one being speared, measured, then flopping back into the hole. Hopefully it makes it, but that's doubtful." That to me is good/bad news. Survival yes, but this sounds like we may be in for a big challenge on the harvest. [smilie=brickwall.gif]

Hamlin is open to spearing? I guess I didn't know that. Seems like a waste to even stock it then. Only in Michigan.

35,000 fall fingerlings soo far, thats a pretty expensive shooting gallery. The pike fishing has been reduced to hammer handle madness there too thanks to overharvest. I'm sure a 35 inch ski must look enormous to those spearers after seeing nothing but 16-24 inch northerns all day.

I know, I'll shut up. I just love this state and hate to see it wasting its resources. Oh well.

At some point the hammer handle pike become food for the legal size muskie, but then so do Age 1 muskie.

Make sure you let them know this with comments to the management plan.

Even if spearing eventually allowed I would love to see a 10 year moratorium on newly stocked lakes.

That is a positive good suggestion comment for the management plan.

I will. I already sent 1 email about the plan, but I will probably send another. I always like asking them why we are the only place that allows musky spearing, and still would LOVE to hear some type of response or explanation to that. I've sent more emails the last 2 years to various people within the DNR than I care to admit, and have yet to get any repsonse.

Like everyone else I'm just tired of it. Me complaining does no good, I know that. Its just a way for me to vent.

Tribes are still allowed to spear in lakes with a spearing ban right?

Tribes have their own regulations and they could spear. Fortunately there appears to be little if any interest in harvesting muskies.
