I just heard a report from a friend on the lake that a monster was caught thru the ice in the last week on Gun. I have seen a few reports of the former stocking efforts, and this one was said to be one of those. From what I hear it was 56" and around 35 lbs and was tagged in the 1989 fish survey done on the lake.
If anyone has any more info, that would be cool, and i am trying to hunt down pics too. It would be amazing if the fish was really that old! and I would also be interested to know the size of the fish in the 89 survey.
If i can get any more info ill post it.
The whole things seems like a long shot…but we will see [smilie=brows.gif]
I heard of a few fish being speared there last year. Ranging from 48-52". It's a damn shame if there is truth to the 50+'s. That is one of the lakes that has natural reproduction if I'm not mistaken. There is a bait shop that always has some pics in it. Haven't seen them myself, but have a friend that lives on the lake. Maybe it's that Shell station on Chief Noonday? They have some bait & tackle. I'll have to make a couple phone calls, as I have some relatives on the lake as well.
Right here. In Barry county. It's too bad there isn't a fishable population there. It's only 15 min. from my house.

after reading the DNR report on the fishery from '91, it claims that there were great lakes strain in there naturally, then northern strain stocked from the mid 70's til '83. I suppose this doesn't really answer that question, but at least its a start! The DNR at the time said there was still some natural reproduction possibly in a smaller connected lake.
I think the small connected lake is Payne Lake. I've heard reports of people catching the occasional one in there. My cousin lives on that lake and I believe it was 2005 when a ~35"er was caught there. Gun Lake is a huge mystery to me when it comes to muskies. There are a LOT of places to hide, and the recreational traffic reminds me of an every day Jobbi Nooner! LOL! But it's a big lake, and the only one around for miles with a big state park, beaches, campground, nature trails, etc. It's draws in the crowds.

Jim, I've never been on Gun & Gull, both are big. Over the years I've heard of accidents on those lake where someone gets killed every year.
There are accidents weekly on Gun. You want to stay far away from there during any holiday weekend, although I'm guilty of doing it. The jet-skiers that go there are horrible. I was almost hit by one while waterskiing. And when we were younger, I can remember my Dad chasing them down ready to throw the fire extinguisher at them for getting too close to our tuber, kneeboarder, etc. There is also the fast boats that go there on the weekends. Guys with those 2-seaters doing 80+ mph. Fun to watch, but dangerous. Gull lake, I'm not all too familiar with. I've done work on houses there. Beautiful lake. Crystal clear and deep. It grows some BIG pike…
After hearing what I just heard today, I seriously want to organize a muskie hunt. End of Sept, beginning of Oct. Get around 25 boats out there, and fish like mad. There is a lot of water out there, but 1/2 of it can be crossed off as "dead water". I think putting a muskie in the boat on a lake like that would be cool. And chances are, it would probably be a GLS fish. From the pics I've seen today, it looks like that's the dominant strain.
Im planning an ice out trip already if anyone wants to join me… low weeds great visibilty… might be an easy time to at least spot one. i am not really even concerned with the fishing part, just the looking for the fish part, if it happens to be after the season closes. im planning on taking a shallower running boat into long lake too.

(Steve, I suspect you've been spotted THEN barred ! <url url="[Permission to view this media is denied]

Never been to Gun Lake but it sounds intriguing. I can't catch a fish anyway, so why not not catch them at Gun, maybe before or after the zoomer season?

Good point. Then if you don't catch one, there's a couple excuses:
1- They are a needle in a haystack anyways. I didn't expect to catch one
2- It's 2600 acres! How do you expect me to find a fish in 2600 acres?
Whole lot easier saying that than going to a 126 acre puddle (Campau) and getting skunked. [smilie=bangtard.gif]
This may help a little. The red marks areas where muskies were caught/seen/lost from the early-80's through mid-90's.
Like any larger water, the muskies in Gun had varied coloration depending on the area of the lake. Some were lightly colored and more silver/green while others were more distincly colored and brown/green.
There was not a remnant GLS when the N. strain stocking started. The muskies still in Gun are what remains from the stocked N. strain.
