I have had a few questions sent my way regarding the guided Tahq trip that I will be donating, so I just wanted to flesh out a couple details as a prelude to the overview that I’ll give at the banquet.

The trip will start at a meeting point (likely Clare for the down-staters) where we’ll load up into my suburban with my boat in tow. Alternatively, some folks may wish to follow along with their own transportation if they are looking for an extended stay in the great north (longer than the 2 days, 2 nights that we will be at the cabin for). If you ride with me, all gas and food expenses will be covered up and back down. We will continue north to the boat launch at the mouth of the river, which is located 8 miles downriver from the cabin where we will be staying, and ~16 miles downriver from the lower falls. From there I’ll head to musky camp by boat, while my brother Duke will navigate the trails by land. If the winning bidder(s) wish to follow in their own ride, 4WD is typically necessary to get all the way back to the cabin.

We will bring 1 or 2 boats depending on the winning bidder(s). For example, if 2 folks decide to go in together and one is die hard lure slinger while the other might be along for the scenery (worth the trip alone), we could have 3 in my boat easily. If two more serious anglers go in together, then we would have Duke’s boat also in tow to take back to the cabin. That can be a real fun way to fish – 2 boats hitting opposite sides of the river, Duke piloting one and me the other, within talking distance the whole way as we fish.

The cozy Tahq cabin itself, while being my favorite place on earth, is certainly not amenity-filled. Of course, this is the main reason why it has become so appealing to everyone that has spent a night there. Drinking water is provided by an artesian well off the front porch; lights, stove and fridge are powered by propane; heat by a wood stove, and the bathroom is an outhouse. Certainly a good portion of the draw for musky fishing in God’s country is in its distant, rustic remoteness. And everyday at the cabin, as you'll see, is truly a great day. That sentiment has proven not only to be true for our regular group of yooper wannabe’s, but also everyone we have brought up there – including self-proclaimed city slickers (aka fudgies)!

I’ll discuss more details at the banquet regarding the cabin, the experience, the fish, and the styles/types of fishing that we typically do. In the mean time, please feel free to contact me if any questions come to mind – either by a post, email or phone (** you do not have permission to see this link **, 989 600-0549).

Hey Pete,

I'm very interested in this trip and wanted to get a feel for what you and Duke would prefer. On one hand, my fiance and I wouild like to go. Karen does pretty well and can cast for a 10 hour day. We both really enjoy and apppreciate the wilderness experince. I don't want the female thing to be an issue so if it is geared for a couple of guys just let me know and i will get another partner.

Thanks, Tim

There would certainly be no issue with bringing a lady along. Although in general they may be more sensitive to the one-room sleeping arrangments, lack of indoor plumbing, and presence of an outhouse, all the gals that we have taken up have had a blast. That list has included girlfriends, wives, grandmothers, daughters, mothers…even mothers-in-law!

So the limitation isn't on this end, but I definitely would detail the above description of what 'roughing it' entails in this case, and leave the decision up to the better half.

Sounds like a great trip Pete. I heard of a 51 incher hooked up on the other side of the falls last year. Lotts of nice fish in the river. Did MMa ever get any info on the tracking study in their?

Yup, somebody will be real happy when they win that trip…a guaranteed blast!

The DNR did learn a bit in their tracking study, but not what they were shooting for. Here's the cliff notes version:
– muskies die when you boomshock above 80 degrees
– dead muskies go over the falls
– alive muskies can jump small falls (astounding, to say the least!)
– muskies can cover many, many miles of river in a single day
– they have no idea where in the river muskies spawn (the study's original intent)

Sounds like a pretty conclusive study! I would have to say that I believe muskies can be killed by boomshocking in 50 degree water as well. The bigger the fish the harder they get zinged.
You forgot to mention that there are bears and wolves and moose that may attack you while you are in the UP!

Hemi – Jack Bauer is only alive because Chuck Norris has allowed him to live.

Since we've hi-jacked this thread…

First there would need to be the contenders match…

vs

Then the winner gets the opportunity to be killed by Chuck.

Jack Bauer killed so many terrorists that at one point, the CTU's #1 Most Wanted Fugitive was an 18-year-old teenager in Malaysia who downloaded the movie Dodgeball. Cool
