Heard a rumor today from a friend that someone walleye fishing recently caught and released a 40 inch muskie from the Grand River near the fish ladder downtown Grand Rapids. He said the rumor came from Al and Bob's Sports shop in GR and they were hoping to get pictures from the guy to post up at their shop. Has anyone heard more about this? I am real curious to know if it was a great lakes fish or a planter excaped from Thornapple…my guess is its a Thorn fish though.

Doesn't surprise me at all if true. Prolly a Thornapple fish like you said but Murray fish can and do escape into the grand as well via the flat river. I know Ovid fish escape over the dam but I'm drawing a blank as to wether or not they could end up way down there. Could be a GLS fish as well, lot more of them turning up in the drowned river mouth lakes and rivers the past few years.

Yes, it could also be an Ovid fish. Lake Ovid is on the Little Maple River, which drains into the Maple River, which is in the Grand River watershed. You can see "Lake Ovid Dam" on this map if you look carefully.

Yes to above and also could be a wandering Macatawa fish (old male). I could also be convinced there's a growing naturalized population in Spring Lake and the lower Grand…
