The 768 will have dual card slots and three preset buttons. You can it use with the Humminbird network but it isn't an ethernet unit like the new 700 series.
The 581 doesn't have the presets, has only a single card slot and can't be networked.
The 768 was a $500 unit last year so it's a good deal if you're OK with the external gps module.
Looks like they have the same resolution, screen size, mapping, and transducer, but thats about where it ends. The power ouput on the 768 is double, which will record more detail, the GPS is internal and not linkable on the 581, so you are stuck with 16 channel waas, which according to the humminbird people gets you to about 10 ft., whereas the 768 is external only (you would have to buy a puck for another $150) but gets you within a couple feet. The 768 is also linkable to weathersense which gives you barometric pressure and temp, and what they are doing, cannon link (to control electric downriggers) and also interlink to connect other graphs. So depends on what your looking for something you can expand, with more accurate outputs, or something to mark waypoints and give you depth and structure readouts…
Ive been looking for an upgrade too, and its a pain trying to sort out all the fluffed marketing they put on these things! I also want something better now, but want something good enough to move to a new boat in a year or two and be able to hook into something even better on the console… good luck [smilie=giveup.gif]
Thanks for the comments! I probably won't be able to buy it for awhile, but thought I would ask anyways. I'm not looking for anything special so I am leaning towards the 581. I really am only looking for an easy GPS unit that will help me fish new lakes and mark way-points on follows, catches, and new spots. Also, since these are both black/white units I read they are not compatible with Lakemaster chips, correct?

I'm not sure on the Lakemaster chips. I would think that the newer black and white units could use them. You just wouldn't have some of the features available, like the depth highlight option.
If you can't use them, try to find a Map Create 7. That is what I'm going to buy, since the LCX-15 doesn't use the newer cards. When you do find one of the older cards on ebay or from searching on Amazon, the price is through the roof (IMO-for an old tech item)
Anyhow, the M/C 7 will let you pick out the lakes you want, and load them onto an S/D card. I checked the lakes in MI, and they had everything I wanted, so I suspect that may be the case for anyone else too.

Navionics only w/ the 581.
That 768 looks like a nice unit. I am shopping for a 700 series head to display GPS info off my 787c2i. Apparently I can take an AS syslink cable and run it from my 787 to a 700 series and it will display, even though I have an internal GPS according to the humminbird techs. Has anyone here done this? The price difference is close enough to make the 768 more viable unless someone is looking to offload a non GPS 700 series head for an upgrade. If anyone is interested in selling a 718 728 or 737 humminbird head let me know.

Do you mean they told you that an external unit could use the internal from another unit? That doesn't sound right at all…
If you want to wait until next winter I'll probably be selling a 788ci HD.

First call the techs said to use the AS Syslink but the Y cable setup didnt look right to me-called back today and talked to 2 levels of tech support who said it would work. The 788 is a nice head unit.
