Probably a dumb question, but something isn't working for me so need to ask. Got a GPS hooked up to the boat this winter and bought a Navionics Hotmaps Premium North chip for it. However, when I put the chip in and looked at some lakes, there was no change from the GPS without the chip. Is there something I have to do to load the chip or should it just work when inserted?

If it's an older lowrance unit (first gen hds 5) the software has to be updated with an sd card or the maps won't load.

Or you have to go into settings and just switch to the navionics card from the default maps.

Not sure what unit you have so I just threw that out there…

Try hitting Menu

Map Data

Select Navionics

Then select the region you want to display.

Also not all of the lakes are in "HD" so the map on the card and the map on the unit are the same crappy map. I learned real quick that the lakes I think are important do not line up with the people who made the software.

All of the above. I have the 3500 c models and only the bigger lakes are on the Navionics chips. The newer chips are better but for us we still map every lake and forget the chips. As far as accurate readings the Lowrance is good to within 5 feet when you are getting waas. We simply take every lake we fish and map out the breaks all the way around the lake using icons and way points. Some lakes only need key areas mapped so you can save way points that way. My units make us select the region as was stated above. I go to map data and select one of 4 regions with my Gold north chip or Lowrance which is the basic crude map of the lake.

One other thing to mention is the chip maps will not zoom in as close as the Lowrance maps. This is important when casting certain breaks where you want accuracy. And trolling certain edges with very steep breaking drop offs. That was another reason we just decided to map each lake by zig zagging along the edges leaving way points. Mike
