Austin is iced over. Looking for a lake tomorrow to fish, any lakes out there still accessible?

Fished Murray today, 11-22. Wide open. Water temp still in the low 40's. Should be open for a couple weeks yet. Wish I could say I caught something. Spent nearly eight hours on the water.

I'd like to go to Ovid tomorrow but am not sure, was hoping someone visited today and would report here. It's been cold and if calm enough, maybe it coulda' iced over too. I'll check here in the morning before making the hour + drive. In past late fall cold snaps, Murray's depths seemed to keep it open a long time if not too calm and cold at night, I was hoping to go there next weekend since this coming week looks warmer then it's been.

We (Jim tenHaaf and I) were there today, and in the early morning it was ~40% covered with a thin (1/16") skin with maybe 15% more covered with thicker ice, up to 3/8". Water was 33-35°F.

Later in the day most of the ice melted so the lake was 85% clear, but a few more sub-freezing nights and it'll be iced over completely.

Thee aren't any fish in there, anyway! 👿

Thanks all, I might try a little ice-breaking on Ovid today, and Murray next weekend, that might do it for the season but we'll see…

Broke ice on Austin on Saturday. It was pretty thick 1/2 near the launch, but not so bad in most other spots. Of course the reels froze up after about 30 minutes, so that pretty much ended the season- unless we get a warm up sometime soon.

The biggest problem with Ovid is that the parts that were frozen were the parts with nice cover ie weeds. We were marking fish as we crunched through the ice, but seldom saw anything on the graph in the open water.

When I was out on Bankson Friday I was clearing off guides regularly, my muskie rods are harder to clear than my fly rods. I bet breaking through that ice on Austin was interesting, it seemed thick enough to make it a challenge.

Ovid was about like I feared after a calm cold Sat night, John C's pic in the reports section showed the launch area after a few of us rammed through the ice, and a lot of the lake had it over the best areas. It was 1" thick in spots, enough to where a big rock thrown near the ramp didn't break it, and my bow went up onto it in spots before my heavier friend move to the front of the boat to break through. Oh' well, no prop or transducer damage and good to get out.
