I think its just where the fish is the thickest. This is where the weight formulas can get a little off as some fish are really thick just in one spot while others are thick throughout their entire body.

Jason is right. Check it front to back. Some have broad backs, some have big bellies, some have both. Those are the onse you want…

I like to measure behind the pectoral fins, in front of the pelvic fins and take an average of the two. Since girth is nothing more than an "ego stroke", personally I prefer to have it consistent from fish to fish compared with just looking for the largest girth on the fish.

Will's 'girth average' is most accurate and non bias way to measure.
