I thought I'd give this a try, put a wrap of friction tape on the reels instead of mono. Seems to work, anybody done this?

No, I've always used mono. Mono has a dual purpose. It makes the braid stick to the spool ,and takes up space as well so you aren't filling the spool up with braid that you will never cast.

Got a bass buddy that uses both… mono as a filler and then tape about 75 yards down to help keep backlash from cutting too far into the spool… I just figured it'd be easier to learn not to over run [smilie=brows.gif]
