Do we have any flowage lakes, like they have in WI.? With islands, bays, rock bars and most important Muskie's.

Although i'm not up to date on the muskie population there these days, Bond Falls Flowage in Ontonagon fits your bill.

Just about every flowage on the Menominee river has muskies. Some are better than others. Some of the flowages on the Michigamme have some muskies as well. None are either numbers or trophy fisheries but one can have good days despite this. Of all of them, only Chalk Hills is planted but thats the last place I would send someone to to catch fish. They are much better in the fall than at any other time. Bond Falls has a remnant population of fish but I imagine that recent drawdowns due to licensing agreements and period of record low water have really screwed things up.

Stupid newbie question: WTH is a "flowage"? Embarassed A reservoir created along a river? Like Sanford and Wixom?

The difference between a reservoir and a flowage is that a reservoir is used to reserve water for use as in the Greenwood reservoir which stores water for use by the Tilden Iron Ore mine. A flowage stores water for power production and usually is required to output discharge water at "run of the river" which means water in has to equal water out with minimal storage and pond fluctuations………..usually. NOT in the stupid question category, Hemi. Very good question as a matter of fact.

Thanks!

(Previous stupid response deleted! 🙄 )

There is a dam on the Grand in Lansing for the Board of Power and Light power station downtown which probably fits this description. I've never heard tell of muskies in the pool above this, though…

I defer to Steve H., he's got it covered! And isn't it also true Steve that flowage is just more broadly used in Wisconsin, even when it doesn't exactly fit? Seems they use the term kind of by default, whereas elsewhere in the country (including here) we don't call them flowages even when they behave as such. Whatever you call them, they do almost always make for awesome structure to fish, and if there are muskies present they are very well fed thanks to the ubiquitous sucker/redhorse endless supplies from the river.

Flowages rock! High fertility, sprawling castable structure, buttloads of roughfish and out of this world gamefish growth rates are the norm. We've got some of the best choices anywhere in the Titt chain – from Secord on down to Sanford.

There are a handful of cabins that you can rent on each body of water, and other than a few monsterous units on Sanford that go for big bucks, most are humble and quite reasonable. Not sure how you feel about other fishies, but the chain boasts some of the best bass and pike fishing in the state, to go along with fishable populations of very pudgy muskies. If you do decide to head up, PM me and I can ask around for some unadvertised rental units that are seasonly available. I can also give you my 2 cents on each lake for what it's worth.

Sanford and/or Wixom are HIGH on my to-do this this spring! If possible, maybe even before the season closes on 3/15, ice permitting…

Eactly, Duke. The flowages that I have fished all seem to differ which makes them cool. Some look really good, semi clear classic structure AND are good fishing. Some look very ominous and dark with a greenish slimy look and don't seem to give up the numbers but can hold a giant. Some have wood that helps hold and concentrate fish and some are kind of barren and rocky. I would like to hit that one in Alpena, I've forgotten the name.

The nice looking flowage near Alpena that was just recently stocked (05 & 06) is Lake Winyah (previously or aka Seven Mile Pond).
