I like the idea of CIR for muskies, south of a point where we see evidence of natural reproduction. Sounds like a reasonable idea to me. However, as we transition to GLS, will there be points below this " line" where GLS will successfully reproduce in the future? I sure hope so!! As for the other fish with teeth……..im indifferent based on some good points brought up here on both sides. There is a lot to consider……

Only thing I could see happening though is aswe complicate things, they may just decide to say forget it, leave it as it is now. (which may or may not be a good thing)
Walleye season closes on March 15th and reopens on the last Sat. in April. On years where the Flint, Cass, Tittabawasse and Shiawassee rivers are flowing freely prior to the closure there is a significant number of 10-13 pound walleyes being harvested, however those fish disappear before the season reopens. I don't think we should be targeting those fish while they are spawning even if it is CIR.

You don't think we should because there will be a negative impact to spawning? I realize it's a different system but even with harvest there isn't a negative impact the Detroit River.

With that said, that water could be closed to fishing if there was a concern. Keep in mind, just because this would be a statewide regulation change there could and would be exceptions.

I've lived on and fished the Detroit river my entire life and just by looking at the sheer number of boats one would think it would gave a tremendous effect on the walleye population. But year after year the river is packed full of fish from St Clair to Lake Erie as well as anglers. Some days you could actually literally walk from boat to boat across it. But the fishing remains strong, sure there have been years that have had less than average spawns but I would have blame that on weather ect… Most people are honest but you still have guys going out night after night catching 20-30 walleye and keeping them all. But were also talking about a Great Lake fed system
I am not sure about the impact open seasons CIR seasons would have on spawning on inland lakes? I would not base any decision on the pochers. Like most say poachers will poach. I saw 3 hillbillys in the middle of the Detroit River during prime walleye spawn with over a hindered boats around them with a 45-50 musky dragging on their stringer. I approached them and they were completely clueless as to the season being closed. They did in release the fish.

One argument that was not brought up, unless I missed it would be the amount of revenue generated for the state if seasons were always open.

Thanks all for your input on this, it is a tough situation for sure because it's not black and white. Which is why I wanted to get your feedback before the Warmwater Resources Steering Committee meets in a couple weeks. I was the one that asked for this topic and proposed regulation change be placed on our agenda and I expect a lively discussion as we had here on the forum.

For most waters there is little if any impact to a fishery by allowing year round angling and only allowing harvest during the "open" season. Much of what I've read here is related to the social side and not the biological side of allowing CIR all year. That's where it makes this a hard decision and similar to when the CIR bass season that was approved in 2005. At that time there was no biological data that said we shouldn't allow the CIR bass season. The result was the addition of an extended bass season that is enjoyed by many anglers and without question an increase in money spent around the state.

This proposed regulation will take some significant research to evaluate the impact to our fisheries. Any decision will be well thought out and discussed before it ever gets to the public meeting stage, if it ever makes it that far.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply and discuss this topic.
just a dumb comment.. but who keeps bass??? I cant remember the last time I heard of anyone saying they were going bass fishing for dinner. granted there is accidental death with all fishing but seams like a big deal about nothing as far as bass are concerned to me.

I'm always surprised at how many people keep bass to eat and even target bass to eat.

That and how many people troll bottom bouncers on Lake Michigan for grease balls full of some very bad chemicals….. yuck, and yuck but to each their own.

I will refrain from commenting on C&R……

I see I'm a bit late to the party here…but been a touch busy & have a great excuse so I'll still toss in my 2 tardy cents anyway.

I'm personally in favor of the CIR season…for a few reasons. First of all, I think pushing the harvest season back into June statewide would get more of a universal backing if it was accompanied by a CIR season. I love muskies, I don't want to hurt them, but I have spent a lot of my life figuring out where and how to catch these guys early in the season. It has worked, and the dedicated people that I have seen successfully catching these do no harm to their spawning success. Secondly…the cell phone. I have heard several times, both up in the northern spotty zone and around these Titt parts, that 'poachers' are out snagging vulnerable spawning fish preseason. Empowered with our cells, I really like having law abiding fisherfolk out and about patrolling the waters where poachers would love to have their way with no onlookers. I had a third reason, and it was really awesome…but it's late and Duck Dynasty is on so I better bail.
