OK well after Saturday I need one. My current first aid kit is the 2 Band-Aids I keep in my wallet. The little claw apparently was not enough for Matt's first fish and decided his thumb would be a good way to top off his meal. So instead of getting one of those cheap kits with off brand crap and stuff I won't need, I want to make my own using one of those waterproof plano boxes. Besides Band-Aids, peroxide, gaws, and tape what do you have in your boat?

usually some form of whiskey to sterilize the wound. Scotch works best but regular bourbon is acceptable. It also helps kill the pain [smilie=brows.gif]
other than that, I actually got one from band-aid brand that has a lot of very useful stuff in it, including peroxide, neosporin, an ace wrap, and all the gauze and band-aids you could need. some rubbing alcohol too. for hooks, the rest of the tools, and line I have on the boat for unhooking fish work great for unhooking thumbs.

I realized last week I didn't have a first aid kit in my boat anymore. I am looking to build my own as well.

I am thinking a suture kit might not be a bad idea either, especially with a Canadian adventure on the horizon.

I'm not sure how healthy this is, but I have been known to seal a cut that may have needed a stitch or two with alcohol and super glue. Works like a charm.

Never thought I would need a first aid kit since rubbing some dirt on it has always worked for me in the past but I can now see that it is probably a good idea to be prepared for something more serious that would require immediate attention. A bandaid worked just fine for this situation but I can see how things could be much worse had I put more than just my thumb in the fish's mouth or if you get a hook in the hand while it is still attached to the fish…

My kit looks like this:
– Latex gloves
– antibacterial soap to clean (don't use alcohol it can damage tissue, peroxide is also not good)
– band aids
– gauze pads (various sizes)
– medical tape (2", 1" and 1/2")
– 2" self adhesive compression wrap
– GLUEture or Dermabond (superglue can work in a pinch but not on deep cuts)
– surgical stapler (major cuts)
– scalpel
– lidocaine/syringes
