I fished Sanford last night and the first ski of the season hit the net in the Ranger. Problem was, I didn't catch it. I got out after work and was working a weed line about 50 yards from a crappie fisherman in a 12 foot aluminum boat with a 15 hp outboard. He set the hook into something decent which I thought would be a bass or a pike. However, as he started to get towed around the lake I assumed pretty quick he had a musky on the line. He called out to me and asked if I had a net. Long story short is the fish was spooling him so I got him in the Ranger and used the electric to catch up with the fish. For having 8 lb test and a light pole this guy handled the fish well. After 15 minutes we got the 37 in the net. Hooked that sucker right at the top of his snout where he couldn't bite the pinky jig off. I showed the guy how to properly handle the fish in the net and otherwise educated him on proper release procedures. I was encouraged to find out he knew it was a musky and also knew that it was not a legal size fish. This encounter presented me with a valuable oportunity to do some educating and promoting musky fishing on the lake. I took some pictures of him with the fish and got his address to send them along to him later. This guy had a good respect for the muskies in the lake and was eager to listen to what I had to say. I was very encouraged by this encounter and can't wait to get the pictures printed off and out to him since he claims nobody will believe he caught such a fish unless he had proof. Sometimes it's about bigger things than catching fish. Of course I think I will take up crappie fishing, at least that way I might stick a musky every so often on Sanford.
