No I'm NOT talking about the old TV show from the late 50's or early 60's. Check out the Prez in the latest MI mag. There's a nice article about youth fishing. Will outlines how to approach introducing and easing your son or daughter into the sport. He's getting to be a regular magazine columnist these days. I think he should write a book about muskie fishing!
Most of the information Muskie Tom requested for Will's "book" was divulged relative to Thornapple at the MMA meeting on June 2nd. Will was very open. I know it wasn't the beer….maybe the Vicodin….or just plain empathy for the rest of us "jerk baits" at the meeting. See, that's why you need to attend these sessions. You never know what revelations will occur. Another example, last month's meeting featured LSC charter captain, Bob Devine, with his power point presentation. He actually showed us THE DOCK with the recognizable surroundings where clients caught 40 muskies last season. That's right, 40 muskies standing and casting off a specific dock. And to think I get all that for the price of admission to Tripper's (beer(s) and my usual Southwest chicken wrap). That makes for a worthwhile evening!
Ok…..the book would feature Will writing about HIS style of muskie fishing. The finer points. You know, a day in the boat. This would obviously contain some technical ideas while discussing his approach. Then, and importantly, he should transition into the lighter sidelines of muskie fishing. That would capture the imagination of most readers. This format combination, and if it's masterfully written, will separate itself from the current number of overly technical written books along with the ones that are non-serious for the most part, or whimsical, or even parodies. There's always a niche for a highly focused, micro examination of any popular subject. However, true mass appeal is the marketing name of the game. Hence, the marriage of analytical and humor. Keep the reader wanting to read on because they don't know what's coming next and they're very comfortable. Kinda like sitting in your pajamas in a comfortable chair with your troubles far away. Rather than chapter titles being too discernable make them have to read it to get it. In this way the reader won't be able to select the chapter about "Fall Turnover" and skip the rest. They WANT to read the whole thing because they're curious and you've "hooked em". The reason I think Will is onto something is because of the diverse nature of the two articles I read. The one on "current" was quite involved yet it was readable. On the other hand, the latest submission published was the light subject of youth fishing. On the surface, possibly a bland subject, yet the psychology behind the process of endearing the son or daughter to our sport was not only inciteful but entertaining.
So, capitalize on this format of distinction of subject approach, in-depth analysis, and occasional sections or interjection of subtle humor and you may have a "trophy" catch. Time will tell as Will's pen continues to "cover water".
I can see the hardbound version with the cool cover jacket on my shelf now!
