Being a late Fall fisherman and a father I'm starting to feel guilty for not having a cold water survival/floatation suit. I need to be responsible for protecting myself now that kids are in my life. Has anyone tried the new Stormr and Artic Armor flotation suits? We all know Mustang is king in this category but what do we know about the competitors? Any experiences with these suits? Has anyone actually demo'd any of these suits and jumped in?

Any advice or info is appreciated!!

I myself WILL NOT fish alone once water temps drop to a dangerous temperature and attach a dock rope to the stern cleat to drag behind boat along with starting to wear my lifevest in Fall. I need one of these floatation suits!!

Fire away with your experiences…..[/b]

I haven't really thought about it for late fall muskies. thanks for adding it to my list! I got the Arctic Armor suit a couple years ago for ice fishing. As soon as I know I am safe I take off the coat cuz it is WARM. I also wear it in the river in dec-march steelhead fishing if I am in a boat. Its pretty comfy, fits pretty well and I have not had any of the issues seen in reviews. Overall I would recommend it but don't have experience with the others to say its better.

Don't even mess around, get what you should be wearing the first time. A coveral is the best for anti exposure and there is a reason the coast guard wears this one: <url url="[Permission to view this media is denied]

I have been wearing a version of this suit for the past 5 years <url url="[Permission to view this media is denied]

. This is a full on Gore-Tex Dry Suit, with insulation and flotation layer that doesn’t restrict mobility and is comfortable for wearing all day. The difference between this and a the Anti Exposure suit is about 5+ additional hours of time you can survive in water below 40 degrees. Yes it’s pricy, but if you watch eBay you can often find Mustang dry suits for under $700. There were multiple variables that went into my decision for going all in on a true emersion survival suite. When I originally purchased the suit I was primarily getting it for early season Ice Fishing. I spend a fair amount of time on the ice after dark, and it’s not uncommon to be out there some nights till 12am. After doing some research I learned that all the Anti Exposure suits are great if your rescued quickly, however they will allow water to flush thru and best case scenario you have approximately 3 hours before death comes a knocking (it’s certainly better than nothing). I did the math and realized if I go thru the ice just after dark 7pmish and I’m not expected home till 12am, I’m going to need a suite that will keep me alive worst case for 7 to 8 hours. I started checking around and talking with members of search and rescue and the coast guard when someone made the recommendation to get this suit as it will provide an estimated 8 hours of survival time when worn with the proper insulation.

With this suit in the event of a full body emersion the only part of your body that could get wet are your hands and head, the rest of your body will remain completely dry. This suit has gotten a ton of use, and it works great while casting for Muskie for 8 hours. I know that for most anglers it’s not that likely we will be stranded for 3+ hours in freezing water before help arrives, and the Mustang anti exposure suit is a great option. But for anyone that spends time fishing alone, after dark or on big water during the fall and winter I would highly recommend checking out one of Mustangs Dry Suits.

Did you get my email reply?

I'd have to say with proper preparation, a standard suit would be sufficient for most emergencies. You're either going to get back in the boat in 3-5 minutes or you're not. That's when survival begins.

3 hrs on LSC is actually an eternity as far as SAR. The Air Sta is on Anchor bay, and knowing where the majority of people fish when the water is cold, you a 3, 5 or 15 minute flight from the ramp at the Air Sta. And in each of the places I'm thinking, you're close enough to shore you could get there if you had to. This is where carrying a handheld VHF in addition to a mounted VHF in the boat comes in…but I'm getting off topic here.

For your purposes Scott, I'd say go with the standard suit. I wear a Nomex/GoreTex dry suit when I'm flying. It is nice to get into cold ass water and be dry and fairly warm. The downsides of a dry suit are that they require maintenance on the seals and if they leak at a seam, they require repair. But they are the top in safety and protection if you're willing to spend the coin and keep up with maintenance.
