more like how to get it…
Hey guys, I live next to a lake with extremely clear water, visibility is 7ft+
and it holds some big pike. Cabbage beds are everywhere and they range from 6ft to 15ft with some coontails thrown in.
I've been fishing it hard the last three days and have only caught one 28" pike and a plethora of Largemouths…
Any ideas to get a more consistent pike bite? I'm using my Muskie gear with 80lb line, flouroleader, and small Aglia bucktails…because the water is so clear should I use lighter tackle?
Is the bite being affected by turnover? Its a deep lake, I'm not good with knowing when the lake is turning over…
Figured hey, its fall, should go out and slay pike…but its tough so far and I'm frustrated…
Try a jig with a pork or big plastic trailer almost like bass fishing. It's called a jig and pig and swimming or jigging that past them makes them nuts. I would also try slow rolling a good size (1oz or up) single hook spinnerbait. My biggest muske to date came on the big Johnson silver spoon with a rubber thumper tail trailer on it and make sure you sharpen the hook on the spoon. Good luck!
Honestly, Iv had my best luck for pike in the fall using big plastic bass baits…the biggest issue with these are bite threws so you need to rig them with some sort of leader…I use a nylon leader, which takes alot of the action out of them but seems to help alot with the bite threws
Also, you can tell from the type of hit whether its a pike or a bass usually and if its a pike set the hook sooner rather than waiting for it to take it like you would with a bass
Thanks a ton guys,
Husky jerks killed bass tonight but no Pike love, I am going to give them another shot though…
On the other hand slow rolling big Spinner baits was spot on. We had a ton of action tonight including a big 35"+ fish that was hooked twice, and followed twice and somehow managed to evade the net. I have his spot marked on the gps though and he's gonna get it damnit.
The #14 Husky jerk is good for White Lake, but we sometimes change the back hook to a long shank single hook that has a 3" twistertail. Colors don't seem too important. The single hook allows easier release of fish over 30". We then troll over the top or along side of the weeds. The darn pike also harass my small flatfish when I'm highlining steelhead in late fall.
This fall I have caught 4 Pike at Austin, one on a Claw twitch, one a Lilly hammer 1 on my old reliable Moski green frog teardrop, and one on a 10" fly. These are in areas last year that I was catching Muskie, though I couldnt conclusively say why the Muskie seem to be absent from these areas, just that we are catching bass and pike and not Muskie.
Earlier this summer I caught a decent pike at austin on the Lilly hammer.
Claw was perch, Lillyhammer was a brown perch?
Oddly enough, we had been catching pike trolling with gold/black wally divers up until about a month ago on a few of the pike lakes in the area.
Good luck on your fall fishing!
