Has anyone tried the new Quantum Classic MG Wide Spool reels (1430MG)? Have had good luck with non-muskie Quantums in the past, including an Iron that has lasted forever. Also, has anyone tried the Tica Caiman series (i.e. CM150)? Looking to try something different than my Abus and Shimanos this time.
As usual I'm trying to justify an annual new outfit purchase, trying to find a good stout rig for heavier baits this time around, would love to keep the whole package about $250 if that's possible. Any advice much appreciated, thanks!
Joe,
I haven't thrown the CM150, but I do have a CM200. I really like mine, it is a very nice and smooth reel. It is very easy to disassemble for any maintenance. I haven't put too many hours on it yet (maybe 100) so I couldn't comment on the how long they'll hold up. I haven't had any issues with mine, and I am pretty rough on it.
That does sound incredible, late last season I returned my most expensive reel for repair, a nice Calcutta. The $30 wasn't bad but it took almost 3 months, if that happened during the season I would've been down an important rig for all that time. So Shimano lost my business for now, can't take the risk. Thanks Pete.
OK, I'll chime in now. The Gander/Pflueger reels have a great warranty (likely the best) the only drawback to the Pflueger is that not many places sell them. I put a TON of hours on both Gander and Pflueger reels last season (5 reels). I was not gentle with these reels, I was basically trying to wear them out or get something to break. Had I put a new 6500 through the same torture, based on recent experience, I would have had a broken reel. I was able to get one that broke but not so that it wasn't useable the handle just got a little sloppy. Upon examination it was a fluke deal when they machined the axle for the handle, all others I've looked at don't have this issue. Oh, yeah that broken reel… walked in to Gander Mountain and said I need a new reel. I pulled the sideplate with the handle off the broken reel and replaced it with the sideplate from the new reel and walked out with a fixed reel – no questions asked.
Anyone interested in buying six 6500's some have smoothie drags some need a little work? I'll throw in two new sets of aftermarket gears.
