yup, pretty much. The undersized fish from Wixom, but almost all of the others from Sanford. Makes me even more heartbroken that they completely drained Ross – muddy water turned spearers away up there!

[quote="Pete"]Unfortunate update – another dandy was recently speared…53"er. It will be mounted in the Sanford Bait Shop eventually so we'll all get to see some semblance of her. Also heard unfounded rumors of another 5 between 46-51"…wow, the low water level appears to be really hurting us this year!

And this is all just on Sanford?!!!

They are pulling them out of Austin too, 38-42, 20pd "pike" being taken, reported by the bait shops. A 44, and a 46 as well. Looks like I will be back to fishing a bit north next year.

Sorry to hear the news Pete.

Continually hearing about speared muskies is like sitting at the bar listening to a bunch of drunks that never do anything but order another beer and complain about speared muskies. Complain all you want or do something about it. I was at a District 12 MUCC meeting last week and they told me you can get your spearing resolution in at the next regional meeting February 20 for the 2011 June convention. The MUCC staff will also help you get your spearing resolution in proper form. What's the point of joining MUCC if you're not using the power to help the muskie program?

What would this resolution propose – banning spearing? In all honesty we're already beyond the MUCC "resolution" phase.

Lots of great discussion and ideas in this thread. IMHO the only long-term solution is to totally ban spearing on specific lakes, the ones with muskies.

Quick story – some years ago I was in a marina and there were two photos at the checkout counter, one with 2 big pike and one with 3 big pike. Found out that an employee had speared the pike a few days earlier, 2 pike one day and 3 the next, all measured between 40" and 45". Then I found out he speared them on Huzzy Lake, where I lived at the time. Huzzy is only 80 acres and this dude killed 5 big breeders in two days. I went back in the shop to talk with the guy, young and dumb it turned out, but reasonable in listening to me explain CPR and such. He also told me that in the end he threw the fish away, all 5, because "I waited to long to clean them."

There has been no spearing on Whitmore Lake since I can remember, and there are big pike in there as a result.
You can lead a horse to water, but you cant make them drink. [smilie=brickwall.gif]

We should put a team of local guys together to go out as spear fisherman during the season. If anyone is caught taking illegal Musky while were are out we can contact the police and they will contact CO and be on the scene within 20 minutes. If we catch the people redhanded maybe we can detour some of the illegal harvast. I'll volunteer to go out anyone else interested?

Hey guys, just curious I've never driven by any lower chain lakes or fished them in the winter. How many spearing shanties are usually set up and where are most of them located?
