Thought this would be interesting since the double tens were THE lure to have in 2006. Word spread in 2007 and the number of big fish was amazing, yet many anglers still weren't throwing them. 2008 was the year of the double ten at the muskie shows and the lure made its way into most boats.
Pick and answer and if you want to share your feelings about double tens please do but don't bash any manufacturer.
I only have one, no fish, but it doesnt see much time in the water. Double #8's, I can handle and they catch fish for me. I have a Longtale spinnerbait with a single #10 that has produced well, I think it thumps more than the double. But, its still hard to crank, even with my Penn 975. [smilie=2c.gif]
If one is going to put a good amount of time in fishing these baits and doesn't want to be hurting after it, he or she should get the abu 7000 with a 4.1:1 gear ratio or any reel that has a very low gear ratio lol. This is kind of overkill because it has been talked about a ton, but I can fish them all day and barely feel it in my forearm.

Do you have trouble burning them? I got rid of my 7000 4.1 because it was too much work to get any kind of speed but was nice for normal speeds. I was going to pull the trigger on a Saltist w/ level wind when it first came out but I'm going to let others fish it first.

Tell me that when you get to be 46. 🙄
Oh, by the way, I do have a 7000. I like the Penn much better.

You got rid of your 7000??? I almost bought one a little while ago. I didn't see that one for sale on the forum. [smilie=brows.gif]

You missed it at the lure swap in Chicago two years ago. I liked the reel the first couple times I threw it then grew to hate it as the season progressed. When I wanted to reel a bucktail at 5-6 mph the 7000 w/ 4.1 was just too much work. The 5.3 is better but still not something I like.

Are you talking about burning them at the surface?
It is a little difficult for me to burn them but I would rather work harder to turn the reel handle faster than to get my forearm really sore by using a higher gear ratio reel. If im burning them I make sure I start the retrieve right when the bait hits the water; that way the bait is right at the surface and the blades will give it enough lift to be bulged. The lower gear ratio gander mountain reels and the Pete mania reels work well too but i feel the gear gets worn out so much quicker than the 7000. My dad is getting his induron 400 back from repairs soon so ill have to see how that handles the big bucktails. Hopefuly it works well because I will get one of those instead of the 7000 as it will be easier to burn but still easy on the arm. Its also not the HUGE size of the 7000 which will be nice 😀

Not bulging it, I'm talking about BURNING it. 5-6 mph so you have to hold the bait under with the rod. The low ratio (4.1) couldn't generate the speed needed to really burn a tail of any type.

yeah i never really tried that. I was thinking one would have to keep his or her rod under the water as the blades have so much lift that the bait would come out of the water. I can see that being really difficult and almost impossible with the 7000.
I can do it with Dad's 7000 w/ the 5.3 but it is just as easy w/ a power handle on one of my Gander/Pflueger reels.

My Pflueger Trion 66s are 5.2:1; are yours different?
I have no calibration point for what you call "burning" speed, but I can crank the double-10 Dominatrix I won at the Banquet pretty fast without too much trouble… but I wouldn't want to do it all day, me being old and everything, and I usually find I have no cans of spinach handy either. Same gearing. W/ a power handle they work pretty well but if I was going to spend much time on Vermillion, Anchor Bay or anywhere the fish like the big tails smoked I would have a Trinidad for sure!

Drive the boat along at 4 mph and cast a bait off the front and reel it back with as much resistance as you can manage… that is what I call burning.
I must be a little sadistic…
