I just had Big Al's this weekend!!! It was good- not sure that it made my top 10, but good.

My number one best pizza in Michigan is creatively named "The Pizza Place" in Newberry. Chad I know it did not resonate with you, but that's ok- to each his own! Pizza is a very personal thing and like art it means different things to different people or some BS like that!…

Thanks for this post, I gotta' get to more of these. Pizzaholism is right up there with Esoxitis for me, and I appreciate that plenty of my fellow nutjobs in this club are in the same boat. I salute Duke and Pete for their pizza craze, long live pizza gluttony and esox absurdity!

Could this possibly be one of those "I know I can't get a fix for like a hundred miles" things, so the satisfaction is accentuated???

I have asked myself that same thing many times, but every time I get back that Pizza Place 18"er hits me in the face like a linebacker and barks WHAT WERE YOU THINKING YOU IDIOT. It is ridiculously good. And it is just as good that 3rd day in a row as it is on Opening Day after a 6 month layoff. So that's how I know!

Congrats Dave- that is awesome!!! You are living a hard workin man's dream

For anyone visiting the small town of Rapid City on the south end of torch lake I recommend trying the pizza at a little ice cream parlor called The Cone Corral. I know its just a little ice cream shop but they got some great pizza there and some good burgers and sandwiches too. Just a suggestion for anyone in the area fishing torch, elk, or skegemog. Its a good way to cure the depression after a long day of skunk on the elk chain.

Yes Dave is the current driving force behind Big Als his parents started it and he has been working there since he was young. I occasionally pry his sorry buttocks out of there and into the boat but as the responsible party he is there a lot. I agree with the personal choice thing though for me it has as many memories as good food and it depends on who is in the kitchen a bit as well.

Joe if you ever get up this way let me know and we will chase some esox on the lake, the launch is less than a mile up the road and we put the woop on some serious Pike action out there plus the stray Musky….maybe…or not…its all super secret you know 😉

Never had the pizza at Big Al's, but used to always get subs on the way home from skiing Crystal Mountain. Mmmmm, now I'm hungry!

WTG Pimp!!!

Going back to the list I'm a little surprised at Pizza House, they're OK but not my favorite. I have to say that I'm currently in love with the Old Chicago deep dish… then again being able to order a good pizza and a Huma at the same time makes the whole experience somewhat euphoric.

Certainly an odd list there…guess I've had all but one and most are good but not great. Seeing Tiffany's, DeLuca's and Sam's on there is very cool – unique pies that I crave so bad at times that I'll blow a vacation day just to hit them (…twice, lunch and dinner on occasion). But including Buddy's and Pizza House on the list is pretty tragic…some of the blandest (albeit dang edible compared to a salad or regular people food) stuff out there IMHO. The Place in Newberry and Brooklyn Boyz in Bay City remain at the top of my Michigan list…

I gotta ask if I am the only one that really doesn't like Fricano's??? Ive been there a few times with people that think its wonderful, and I thaught it was almost as good as Tony's frozen cardboard with cheese… Just curious.

I could tell Fricano's wasn't for me without even eating it!…

I also gotta add some more about Big Al's because I said it wasn't one of my favorites:

Don't get me wrong- I thought it was outstanding. Without a doubt- what they do, they do VERY WELL!!! After crushing my own large deep dish, I was still tempted to have some more of the wife & kid's choice with pineapple topping (a complete abomination and disservice to pizza).

I personally prefer a saltier & garlicier & zippier sauce, but it was awesome sauce that is the perfect base to me. I would just love it a little more nuts on seasonings! And I prefer a slightly crunchier crust- I want to get back and have the hand tossed instead of the Chicago deep. Or, since I have an in with the awesome owner, I wonder if I could get the cooking method tweaked a bit on that fat Chicago style!

I always used to think the same thing, then I tried it years ago and it is now one ofmy favorite toppings.

tried pineapple on pizza before as well, but it isn't for me..

I had fricano's for the first time over 4th of july wkend when i was really smashed…

It was pretty tasty, but then again everything is good when im drunk.

Best pizza ive had was a chicago deep dish.

Although lately ive had Petrino's, a small family owned place in holland/zeeland and they have some pretty tasty stuff there
