Hey that's sweet! What's the story here though for those of us not in the know- how did it come about, what material are they made out of, do we get to pole axe anyone who touches these ones??? Sounds like Dave is the man responsible- thanks!
I've still got 4 of the old metal ones that were so popular with your friendly local stupid drunken rednecks… those should be donated somewhere as well
Not much story really… yet. This was basically a sneak peek.
Last year when discussing things that needed to get done here on the forum David Anderson (MuskyPimp) stepped up and took on the project.
This will be the focus at the next meeting and we'll get to decide how much money we want to throw at this project. The goal is to have signs made from a number of materials to fit various needs. Signs that go into a kiosk don't need to be on aluminum and could probably be on vinyl or even laminated.
There are still many unknowns with this project but the design of the sign is done and that's what I wanted to share.
I don't know if this is the final copy here but I would like to offer one little suggestion… I think if you add something to the line about MMA asking you to release all trophy muskies like "to help improve the future of your muskellunge fishery"…something to that effect. It just sounds a little catch-and-release elitist when left without an explanation as to why people should release muskies. I know you can't write a novel here but I think something should be added to this statement. Anyone agree? Disagree? Maybe I am looking a little too far into this and nit-picking a bit. The only reason I am making this suggestion is because I feel that these signs are extremely important. Can't wait to get these out to educate to remaining dumb people of the world.
John – I'm in agreement that it might rub some people the wrong way and also that it could be phrased better or maybe… not at all. Do we really need to say it? It made it on this sign because it was on the old sign. I never really liked it on there and I am amazed the DNR agreed to the first version (on the old signs) that I think was even more non-PC "Michigan Muskie Alliance asks that you please release all non-trophy Muskellunge. Practice C.P.R. Catch – Photo – Release"
The "trophy" aspect of the statement is also a concern. What is a trophy? To the guy that never caught a muskie the 42" minimum is probably a trophy. Also, doesn't the statement condone the harvest of a fish for a trophy? Shouldn't we be educating about proper release and about replicas yet NOT crucify someone for killing a fish. Let them choose what is right for them and within the limits of their license.
So… is the statement trying to do too much with this sign? Should we be using another option "Why Release Muskies?" to educate about release and this sign to simply make sure people KTD?
Warning tangent… had to type it before I forgot about it.
What if MMA sponsored a replica for the largest muskie in the DNR master angelr release division. Would this kill a few birds with one stone? Promote MMA, promote catch and release, promote replicas, promote the DNR master angler program. Hmmm…
yea, I think a sign that says in bold at the top "why release muskies" would have the most effect. If I was some uneducated (non catch and release fisherman) out there and I saw the current sign, I would think…."ooh I hope I catch a 42 so I can keep it!" At least thats what I would have thought like 15 years ago. So yes, I think the sign needs a few changes on why muskies are important etc. Just having a sign stating what a muskie looks like, and how big its gotta be is not enough. Just my 2 cents. Adam
I will only chime in a little here as some of us have spent some time trying to rephrase this along the lines you guys are. We know what we want but the process of changing what is and is not allowed on the sign from a legal standpoint is re-frickin-diculous. I mean do we really have to give credit to the guy who did the original illustrations (yes we do) when a zillion images are available? So right now we have to work within the confines of what we are allowed to put on the signs and get them up before this years fingerlings become fifty. I for one would be happy just to stop the harvest of undersized fish. If we lose a few to the wall here and there then so be it, chances are the mishandling by amateurs will likely result in delayed mortality anyway. A kept fish may result in interest which generates another MMA member which ultimately helps the fishery much more than that one forty two incher ever could. I know its a long way around but I am trying to see the silver lining.

Take this sign for what it is. Educating Joe Public so he doesn't kill a 35" muskie.
Release education wouldn't be another sign but instead getting the Muskies, Inc. brochures "Why Release Muskies" into the hands of more people. We've handed out hundreds at Fish Fest and they really make a difference. If we can get them into every bait/tackle shop within 20 miles of a muskie lake we would be educating.
What would it take? One person in each area to be responsible for keeping the brochures stocked. We could do it bare bones or we could design a display that could sit on a counter or that could be attached to a wall.
Will,
Since I have the sign artwork would it be okay if I were to print and laminate copies for display at tackle shops?
Also, how about putting together an information kit to put up at bait and tackle shops? It could cosist of a copy of the KTD sign,a cardboard display box holding the "Why release muskies", and the new MMA brochures(about a week out). Just a thought.

Ooohh… new borchures? I can't wait to see those.
Yes. The display box is what I was thinking too. There are a few things that we might want to include.
– Tips on Releasing Muskies
– Why Stock Muskies
– Why Release Muskies
We can get these cheap from Muskies, Inc. In fact, we might be able to get about $300+ worth because Muskies, Inc. owes MMA $300+ for memberships last year. The "Why Stock" is probably better for doing shows and maybe not for a bait shop display.

I think that is an outstanding idea. If we could get something printed into the rule booklet, like "To promote the release of ALL muskies the MMA is donating a replica mount of the largest muskie entered into the DNR master angler program's release division", we could potentionally reach every angler in the state with our message. Great idea.
