Hi guys,
I am going to a fly in fishing place that sadly does not contain musky. The smallmouth fishing is awesome and there are some good pike. I have had (3) bass eaten at boat side by mid 40's pike and wanted to target them next week. The water is ultra clear (30-35') visibility and there are a lot of rocks but not many weeds near deep water. The biggest fish (bass and pike) come off deep water and the fish are suspended.
Based on this what baits would you bring? What tactics would you use for large (40"+) pike? It is a fly in which means I can not bring a lot of baits or really long rods and any advice would be appreciated.
If the pike are deep, which depending on the latitude, is a little surprising for Canada this time of year, I would try deep running suspending cranks. There are not a lot to pick from out there in the size I use… I ordered some super shad raps from Europe, but you cannot get them here. Double/Triple D's are too big IMOHO. The largest Smithwick suspending deep divers are only about 5", but they catch fish.
As Jason said, the 9" SuperD would be good. I would also consider swim shads with the weighted hook. Count them down and then jig them back slowly.
You could also use a couple heavy willow spinnerbaits with sparce skirts, like the Boss/Mini Boss from Figure Eight. Those are my favorites for pike. You will have to ley them sink, then slowly bring them back.
I would try hard to find weeds, and work the deep side. THis, I think will be you best bet.
